Videos Got Boosted Framerate Quality, Now It's Not Working Anymore. PLEASE HELP

My question is related to a recent “discovery” I made.

I ran into an issue with my newly built PC.

What happened was that I was reinstalling my AMD Software and some new drivers. During that process, I found out that (somehow, this is the problem) all the videos I would play (YouTube, streaming, mp4 files, Blu-ray disc, etc.) would all play at a significantly higher framerate across the board. I was thrilled about this until I ran into my issue.

For some reason, the next time I powered on my computer it did work just fine at first but after a while, the videos suddenly stopped playing at this increased framerate.

It seems evident that my PC can play all the videos that are played on my PC and convert them to have a higher framerate than the original video quality. I WANT THIS, and I want it to stay on my PC for good.

My question is: “How can I get this amazing feature back on my PC?”

I need someone who knows way more about PCs than I do. I am attaching the details for the specific drivers I have installed recently and the hardware, software, and driver details.

Note: I did use to have version 21.10.2 for my Radeon Software before this happened too, I now have version 21.12.1.

Those new drivers were for what? We do encourage members not to use third party sites to update there drivers.

These were just updates to existing drivers I already had. I’m not very knowledgeable about drivers so I don’t know exactly what they do.

and where did you get the new drivers from?

and to be clear, everything is working - just not at the FPS you’d like?

The drivers I got over that period of time were either from AMD’s Software, the AMD website, or a third-party app called ‘driver easy’.

Yes, everything is working fine. It’s the FPS of the videos I play on my PC that I am not satisfied with.

maybe they have improved since the last time I looked, but I doubt it.

trouble now is to undo whatever they have done and there in lies the rub.
the only way to 100% be sure of that would be to reload Windows afresh - a big hammer to hit this issue with to be sure, but it’ll be the only way to guarantee you remove all the potential tentacles “driver easy” has left behind.

How can I reload Windows without it affecting the data on my computer? I’m fine with my settings getting refresh, I want to ensure my files won’t be affected.

Also, can you explain what makes these third-party driver update apps so bad? I can probably guess why but I am not very knowledgeable on these things.

you have two ways to install Windows - repair install that just reloads the OS and leaves your files alone or a fresh install that doesn’t care what is already installed and wipes the lot and reloads just the OS.
you can try the repair method first but the caveat is, what has this driver easy program done and will a repair install remove everything.
the sure fire method is a clean install and then of course you have to load all your software, just like you did when you first got the rig.
and also, of course, you have to make sure you have all your files (pics, docs, music, vids, downloads, emails, bookmarks, etc) backed up.

as to what they exactly do, each one is different. suffice to simply say they are all malicious (certainly in my experience) - their intent is not to actually help you for free but to install crap, change your browser settings, redirect web searches - anything that they can monetarise.

and all this is only necessary if you want to increase your FPS rates again, and even then there is no guarantee.
I’m simply trying to make sure that driver easy program isn’t the cause, and you sadly won’t know, and therefore can’t move on with any confidence, until all potential side-effects of it existing are gone.

I ran a repair install on Windows and that didn’t get the video quality back

the next hammer, a big one, is the fresh install.
and sadly, still no guarantee of success.
but I for one, would like to know that no left over damage remains (indeed even if there was any to begin with) from that driver easy software before trying to identify further possible causes.

for example, was the brief increase in FPS rate simply down to excellant internet bandwidth, or no background processes like Windows Updates?
