    Computer hangs on startup

    I have a Dell XPS desktop that hangs up on startup once the DELL flashscreen comes up. I can do a hard shutdown and start it again, and it will then load properly, sometimes after doing a fix for an improper shutdown. Once I am loaded up, I can restart from the power options and things will be fine. But if I shut it down it will have the same problem again once I hit the power button on the case. If I hit f2 early enough when the DELL screen comes on, it will load the BIOS screen and then I can just exit from there and it starts up fine.

    I thought that reinstalling Windows 10 might fix this issue, but it did not. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    To post: CCleaner Support Community

    Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.

    Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options;

    List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
    List Installed Programs
    List Devices (Only Problems)
    List Users, Partitions and Memory size

    Click on Go.

      as well as what Peter has requested, what is the age of the unit?

      does the issue still happen if booted into Safe Mode, and from there, rebooted into Safe Mode again?
      from a command prompt, have you run a chkdsk on the drive to check for bad sectors?
      and from an elevated command prompt, do a sfc /scannow to check for system file corruption.

        Thanks for the quick replies. My unit is 4 or 5 years old, Dell XPS8910. I tried running chkdsk at the command prompt but it said I was not authorized. I ran it at the elevated command prompt and it reported no bad sectors. I did, however get a whole string of things like “enter iis not recognized as a command by this system” and “cannot accept this date, please enter a different date”. I am not used to reading those reports, so I don’t know what that all means. The system scan said it found corrupted files and successfully repaired them.

          Also, I was able to restart in safe mode and then restart again from safe mode. My computer is about 4 years old.

          I have another problem that crops up which I think is hardware related, but you should know about it just in case. Every once in a while when I am switching between files or something like that my monitor just shuts off. The PC is still running, but with a black screen I can’t do anything but a hard shutdown to get things usable again.

                my money is on a faulty or failing hard drive.
                backed up by the chkdsk not working properly, sfc finding corruption, the age of the drive and a lot of storage related apps being reported in the event log.

                looks like C:\ is a 1TB HDD, so it may be a good time to upgrade to a SSD - replaces a maybe failing drive, chance to speed the old girl up, potentially fixes the current issue, plus you get a fresh install of Win10 and all the speed advantages that brings.

                are the other drives always connected?
                have you tried using the PC without the external Toshiba’s connected in case they are the cause?
                what are H:, I:\ and J:\ drives? Photoshop?
