Linking Google Photos to phone takes up storage - options?

I checked my phone’s internal storage today and of the 11gb 8 is used by apps and over 4 was in Google Photos

I have about four pictures currently on Photos so where the hell is all this data?

I cleared the cache and now it doesn’t automatically send picture taked with my phone to Google Photos (I like this as i access them from a PC)

So do i have to put up with all that memory being lost just to have this convenience?

Hmm, i’ve just relinked photos with the pictures on my phone and it hasn’t taken up tons of storage

So i’m ok with that
