    Windows 7 or Windows 10?

    Hi everyone,

I have just bought myself some new parts and buidling my new machine. I have treated myself as its been over 7 years since I last upgraded.
    I got myself:
    Intel i5 7600K
    MSI Z270 Gaming M5 motherboard
Crucial 4x 8GB DDR 4 Ram (I know the amount of ram is overkill but honestly you would be shocked at the price I paid hence why I got it)
    Define R5 Case
    Noctua D15s Cooler
    Crucial MX 480GB ssd
    Toshiba 2TB Internal HDD

Only thing I have left to get is a good graphics card which I will get soon, just been deciding back n fourth about it.

Anyhow, the most I am going to be doing is a lot of multi tasking, browsing, emails and watching HD/Bluray Movies via MadVR Codec.

I would like to get the best out of my hardware in terms of playing back movies and overall system performance. I know that for games I will need windows 10 but honestly I dont do pc gaming no more, I prefer my xbox. I dont really like windows 10, I have used it on some peoples machines and hated the new layout etc.

Currently I am still using Windows 7 x64 Ultimate and love it.

I would like to know what you all think? Should I jump to windows 10 to get the best out of what I have bought or will it not make a difference if I don’t do pc gaming?

Sorry for making this post long and apologies if I have posted this in the wrong section.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hello

Yes Win 7 is a great OS but as you know it’s support is ending in the near future. I know Win 10 still has some bugs in it,with the update issues that has been going on..etc Saying that i have a new pc that came with win 10 and it works good,it is quirky on some software and i don’t like the tracking and the update issues which i have not had because i shut down the updates.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I have a feeling they will be cutting support soon as they want everyone to forget windows 7 and 8 so that they are on windows 10. But I guess there is still some time left before they do that. I could just run windows 7 till they do that as by then windows 10 will surely be more stable and better.

However performance wise and for watching movies via madvr codec, is it worth going straight to windows 10 now? Or would you say that there wont be any difference other than windows 7 will run much quicker?

Ok did some research did not see any negative reviews on madvr on win 10 using the latest version. I can’t say that madvr would run any slower or faster on Win 10 than on Win 7. One is i never used this codec
IMHO i would wait to see if MS can get those bugs out of the updates and especially via certain mobos, which have had issues to the point some mobos are incompatible with Win 10..

Apart from madvr codec, is there any other benefit performance wise considering what I have just purchased? From what you’ve told me so far , I get the message that I should best stick with windows 7 till windows 10 is fully compatible, stable and less bugs.

Sorry for asking again, I’m just double making sure that you took in all my new hardware into account for performance too. Just looking to get the best out of my system, I would hate to have not asked and install windows 7 then find out a week later when someone tells me “you should install win 10 mate for your new build, get more out of it with the new cpu features and motherboards features etc which only windows 10 can take advantage of…” lol Then I would have to go with the pain of setting it all up again.

Thanks again for getting back to me so quick though, really appreciate it.

Support for Windows 7 will end in 3 years. That is not the near future.

The problem you will find is trying to buy a legitimate copy of Windows 7. You might be forced to install Win 10 if that is the only version of Windows selling.

Thanks for letting me know about that, still plenty of time.

I have a windows 7 Ultimate copy which I have been using for past few years. I know they discontinued this version, think there was some legal case over it can’t remember I could be wrong.
But If anything, I will just have a heck of a lot of updates to download and install which is fine apart from the download as sometimes MS servers are really rubbish and take forever considering I’m on fibre and get excellent speeds for downloads on all other sites and apps that I use.

You install 3 updates: follow this guide for the updates
Installing Win7 from scratch, KB 3177467, KB 3020369 and KB 3172605 @ AskWoody
then the other updates will not take hours or days to populate.

You can grab the 3 updates from either the download centre or the catalog and install them manually.

Thank you for letting me know about that! I had no idea.

I will read up on that and follow the guide later or tomorrow. I have all my parts delivered. Hopefully build my new machine today after work. I am looking forward to this. Been looking to build a new machine for the past few months and ive just been grabbing the good deals as they came up.

Im going from an old i3 540 straight to kaby lake. This new machine will be flying.

btw is it worth doing a memtest on my ram or should I only do it if I have problems? Also if I do it then can I run the test with all 4 sticks installed at the same time?

If it was me i would wait for a problem to arise.. I think it would be best to test one at a time but it has been a while since i had to use memtest and the newer versions may let you all ram at the same time.

Got my new machine built, looking nice! Spent a good half day doing it as I didnt wanna rush since I spent quite a bit. Just finishing off setting up my apps etc.
I took some pics, will upload them as soon as I can.

I can’t believe how queit this machine is! Ive not put the panels back on and its honestly it is the quietest pc ever. I have to keep physically checking it to make sure it is on and running okay lol
