    Bluescreen problems

When I first got my computer I would get the occasional bluescreen. Then one day it started bluescreening a lot, then every time it would try to boot back up, it would bluescreen again.

I tried to Reset this PC recovery option after trying some of the others and they didn’t fix it. I selected a local install. As it would try to reinstall Windows, it would fail many times. I kept trying and eventually got Windows back up and running.

I thought the problem was fixed but 2 days ago it once again bluescreened and would bluescreen every time it tried to boot up. I tried Startup Repair, booting into Safe Mode, using a Restore Point, and none of them fixed the problem. This time if I tried to Reset this pc, it would fail right away saying there was a problem and it couldn’t reinstall Windows and all I could do was click cancel.

I contacted hp support and they had me reset the bios then had me run tests on the hard drive, ram, and cpu which all passed. He said it wasn’t a hardware problem and I needed to reinstall Windows from a usb drive. They said that if there are corrupt Windows files, that when you do a β€œreset this pc” and install from local, that those same corrupt files will still be there. They said if I used the Windows media creation tool and installed from a usb it should fix it.

I made the Windows usb drive with the media creation tool and used it to reinstall Windows. As it was installing, I kept getting bluescreens, which I found very strange why it would be getting bluescreens at this point if its not a hardware problem. After trying over and over, eventually Windows got installed.

When Windows got installed, I ran SFC and it said it found corrupt files and fixed them, which I found very strange why it would have corrupt files on a clean install I had just completed.

RIght now the computer is up and running but I am very nervous about whether it is really fixed or not at this point.

What would you do? I would love to do some thorough tests to try to see if everything is really ok or not. The last time I reinstalled Windows I thought it was ok but it didn’t take long before I was back in a loop of bluescreen crashes.

Best thing that you can do is make sure that you keep Windows fully up to date an if not one already install the chipset drivers for the motherboard.

Ok thank you I will do that. I’m not at that computer right now, but for the chipset drivers for the motherboard, you update those in device manager don’t you?

The chipset drivers either need to be installed from a disk that shipped with the MB or by downloading them direct from the MBs home page, if you don`t use one of these methods Windows may well download and install a version of the drivers that are incompatible which will cause you no end of trouble.

It’s a prebuilt system I got from HP so I’m not sure about what motherboard it has. Thanks for the tip about not letting Windows update the drivers!

I don’t know how to mark this as solved but I appreciate your advice. So far so good on the new install.

You are welcome and thanks for the follow up (y)

Final nag from me, be sure to create a new system restore point before you install any new drivers, programs or major Windows updates.
