    BSOD Help Request

    I’ve been experiencing blue screens with increasing frequency of late and was wondering if anyone could help. Between updating my graphics card, a suspect WoW installation and the anniversary update I’m not quite sure how to pinpoint the problem or what to do to rectify it.

    WoW has also been randomly crashing and the blue screens also tend to happen when I am running WoW and I have been able to reproduce a crash once, though with a different error code. They haven’t been happening when rendering in After Effects. I’m thinking this is a software issue but I know just enough about computers to build them and troubleshoot with google. As it’s going to take hours to reinstall WoW, it would be helpful if someone could look over the files and see if I’m on the right track.

    What I have done:

    Currently doing:

    [li]Uninstalled all Blizzard games and presently reinstalling WoW[/li][/ul]
    What I haven’t done but am thinking of doing:

    Hi Lyndel and Welcome to PCHF I’m currently at work and can’t look at your dump files until later. This only occurs with WoW?

      Not sure about the first few but the last ones yes. I haven’t had one for hours now after I have removed the game and not played it. I was able to create a crash by doing the same thing in game but it involved an addon which scanned the auction house in game but I wasn’t doing that every BSOD. Once I was just flying in game and once I was just launching the game.
      They are a bit all over the place the last 5 being within a 24 hour period

        I can tell from your BSOD logs that some BSODs are being caused by your nVidia driver. Are your drivers up-to-date?

          yes the Nvidia driver BSOD happened after I cleaned out the old and reinstalled the most current driver. I also didn’t install geforce experience as I thought it may have been a conflict with shadow play and WoW’s new in game streaming

              I can tell you that the AU is not stable, hence why I created a post advising updating. It’s plagued with bugs, faults, and errors. That’s why I myself have not updated.

              Nothing in your logs indicate WoW was the cause of the BSODs, but rather the kernel and the nVidia driver. Have you tried using a older version to see if the BSOD occurs with it? The reason I ask is because sometimes newer drivers can induce faults in the core programming of the driver, resulting in a BSOD.

                I’m rolling my graphics driver back to 364.72 right now. I’ll then download and run WoW and see if I can recreate the BSOD. Even though it’s not WoW itself it obviously exposes the fault.
                I’ll let you know how that goes. I may or may not have to try a few driver incarnations to find a stable one.
                If I have any more BSOD’s I will post the dump files.

                    I seem to have found a more stable Nvidia driver with 368.81 but only time will really tell. I ran the in game scan that produced 2 blue screens previously and it seemed to go fine. I will just have to see how it performs in after effects while completing my assignment over the weekend. I’ll let you know how that turns out.

                    Thanks heaps for your help. I knew just enough to think it was software and graphics related but not sure exactly how to pinpoint the problem for a fix

                      Ok. So I’ve finished rendering my project in After Effects and I don’t seem to be having and problems playing WoW. Most importantly no blue screens. Even though I’m not willing to trust my computer rendering demanding particle effect or running Crysis at the moment, I’m quite happy for you guys to mark this as solved and if I have any more problems I will get back in touch.
                      One last thing though. Just to get a confirmation on what was happening. Windows AU + new graphics driver = software conflict causing kernal and driver errors.
                      I’m also guessing that the next step if the driver rollback didn’t work would be a Windows recovery (-internet) back to pre AU as it is too late for rollback and then prevent the update until stable?

                        I’m not entirely certain if rolling back to a pre-AU is possible at this time. If it hasn’t BSOD’d by now when you did those tasks you mentioned earlier, it probably won’t BSOD

                              Actually there is a way to rollback to the Previous Build should AU prove more trouble than it’s worth. (y)
