Can't play any online PC games

Hi Folks
I PC running Windows 11 won’t run any online games via Xbox and Windows 11.
PC specs are as follows:
MSi B450 Tomahawk Max
AMD Ryzen 5 4.2GHz
32GB DDR4 RAM
Radeon RX580 8192MB Graphics Card
500GB SSD
1000GB HDD

So in theory I have more than enough computing power to play any online game. All drivers are fully updated as are windows updates. However, when I download for example Forza Horizon 4 & start to play the game begins to load up & then crashes, the same happens for Halo ( all versions ). I’m lost I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong if anything at all. I built the PC myself & so far have had no issues with it but the gaming issue is really bugging me so any help would really be appreciated.

Can you post the brand and model name or number of the power supply (PSU).

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Hi Phil I left my son in charge who has completely messed things up. Because he couldn’t get anywhere with Win 11 he decided to go back to Win 10. Which in hindsight I don’t think was such a bad idea because we did have a Xbox game pass in the past & we did manage to play a few online games with WIN 10 as our OS. I have now tried to reinstall Win 11 via the media creation tool & my PC crashes half way through, so I’ve done the basics chkdsk, sfc & DISM & the PC boots up ok in win 10 but if I try to reinstall win 11 at about 80% the PC crashes.
So my initial problem of me not being able to play online games seems to be on the back burner right now, I think there is something fundamentally wrong with my PC that needs accessing & I’m hoping that I can get that help from your truly. I am a little concerned that you are asking about the PSU. I’m hoping its simply because I missed it out from my original summary as opposed to something more sinister.

I have attached above the Speccy summary but here is the basic summary from Overclockers when I purchased the components.

MSi B450 TOMAHAWK MAX SOCKET AM4 DDR4 ATX MOTHERBOARD
Amd Ryzen 5 3600 Six Cores 4.2GHz Socket AM4
4 X 8GB Team Vulcan TUF Gaming Alliance DDR4 PC4-25600C16 3200MHz Dual Channel kit
Power Color Radeon RX 580 Red Dragon V2 8192MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
WD Blue 3D NAND 500Gbps 2.5" SATA 6Gbps SSD
Samsung HD103uj 1000GB HDD
Bitfenix Formula Series 550w 80 Plus Gold PSU
Zalman S3 Midi Tower Case - Black window

I look forward to hearing from you soon regards

Hello Nisar,

The PSU as long as still in warranty is adequate for your build.

Couple of things of note in Speccy;
RAM
32.0GB Dual-Channel DDR4 @ 1199MHz

Ryzen CPUs are notorious for not liking slow RAM so you need to enable XMP in the BIOS so your RAM gets the best from your CPU.
Operating System
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
Computer type: Desktop
Installation Date: 24/07/2023 17:42:26

As you have previously mentioned Windows 10 has been reinstalled, problem with how it has been done is explained in my canned info below.
Once Windows has been clean installed you must then install first the MBs chipset drivers, then the storage/SATA drivers and third the graphics drivers, the drivers can either come from a disk provided by the motherboard manufacturer or downloaded from their site and saved to a flash drive etc, this is a must and Windows should not be allowed to check for updates before it has been done as more often than not Windows installs the wrong drivers or in the incorrect order and this can cause all sorts of problems.
SAMSUNG HD103UJ
Manufacturer: SAMSUNG
Business Unit/Brand: Desktop
Business Unit Type: Spinpoint F1 DT

There is no partition information for your Samsung HDD.
Flash drives
Generic STORAGE DEVICE USB Device
Interface: USB
Capacity: 29.8 GB

Suggest that you remove this from the PC for the time being.

We will formulate a plan once you have gotten back to us.

Hi Phil,

Thank you for the prompt & detailed response. I’ve taken on board what you suggested especially with the RAM running at 1199MHz as opposed to the advertised 3200MHz. So I enabled XMP profile 1 & the best I got was 1599MHz ( please see attached speccy summary )

I’m going to give profile 2 a try to see if that makes any difference & report back but before I do I’m going to see if I can either play any of the Xbox games I had problems with and I’m going to try & install Win 11 again to see if my PC still crashes at around 80%.

Hi Nisar,

That is about right for the RAM speed so no issues there.

Before you do anything else and especially reinstalling Windows, can you do the below for us so that we can check your Samsung HDD.

Can you upload an expanded screenshot of Disk Manager for us.

Access Disk Management via Run.

Press the Windows+R keys to open Run, type diskmgmt.msc in the empty box then press OK.

To capture and post a screenshot;

Click on the ALT key + PRT SCR key..its on the top row..right hand side..now click on start…all programs…accessories…paint…left click in the white area …press CTRL + V…click on file…click on save…save it to your desktop…name it something related to the screen your capturing… BE SURE TO SAVE IT AS A .JPG …otherwise it may be to big to upload… after typing in any response you have… click on Upload a File to add the screenshot.

Screenshot instructions are provided to assist those that may read this topic but are not yet aware of the “how to”.

Hi Phil,

Quick update tried profile 2 XMP but alas i’m still getting the same speeds of 1599MHz. I accept your judgement & experience but its under half of what is advertised. I know its a lot better than the 1199MHz I had but just out of interest do you know why its a lot lower than the advertised 3200MHz?

I will run the disk manager for you & post the screenshot as a jpeg

Hi Nisar,

An explanation regarding your RAM speed, the 1599MHz is for just one stick of RAM and because you have two sticks working in dual channel you actually have two Xs 1599MHz which = 3198MHz only 2MHz short of the labelled 3200MHz, hope that clears that up for you.

Your Samsung screenshot does not look good, did you have any data on this drive.

Hi Phil I had a back up of the Samsung drive so there wasn’t really anything of importance on that drive. I did have some family photos & videos but I removed them onto an external SSD several weeks ago just in case I had problems with my PC

Hi Nisar,

Good news that you have backed up the drive already because any data on it has for all intents and purposes gone, note that it says that the space is unallocated, anything on the drive has either been deleted or would need data recovery services to ty and find it.

We can check the health of the Samsung drive at some point but can I ask how things are now going with the PC in general.

Hi Phil

Not brilliant these are the following errors I’ve had this afternoon. I’m lost for words as to why I’m getting so many BSOD’s on a new windows install.

Kmode exception not handled
Page fault in non page area
IRQL NOT LESS OR equal
attempted write to read only memory
Kernel security check failure

As was explained in my reply #6 Incorrect driver installation will cause all sorts of problems, can you do the below and when you upload the dmp files can you also tell us what the PC was being used for when the latest crashes happened.
1. Copy any dmp files from C:\Windows\Minidump onto the desktop.
2. Select all of them, right-click on one, and click on Send To> New Compressed (zipped) Folder.
3. Upload the zip folder using the Attach button, bottom left of the dialogue input box
