5800X3D Win10 Pro PC just shuts down when playing games

Upgraded my Win10 PRO PC in the fall
CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D
Memory : TeamGroup T-FORCE VULCAN Z 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 PC4-25600 CL16
GPU: GIGABYTE Eagle Radeon RX 6650 XT 8GB GDDR6 PCI Express 4.0 ATX Video Card GV-R665XTEAGLE-8GD
Monitor: LG Ultragear 32" QHD (32GN600-B.AUS)
PSU : Brand new EVGA SuperNOVA 850 GA, 80 Plus Gold 850W (220-GA-0850-RX)
M/B: ASRock AB350M Pro4 (AM4)

See full Speccy profile here:

(Note: Speccy says Ram is only 1600mhz but it is 3200mhz and is registering as that in BIOS and running at that speed in all my other tests so don’t know whats up with Speccy)

I didn’t really push it with any demanding games until recently. Ive monitored temps of the GPU and CPU and they are operating within limits (50C - 69C with spikes to 85C when really pushing it) for a variety of games. Overwatch 2 runs fine and most games via XBOX GamePass (i.e. Dead By Daylight, HALO: Infinity) run with no issues

It is when i throw the latest games (Forspoken, Uncharted, Bendy & The Dark Revival) that i will play for like 10-20 minutes and then the machine will just power off. No warning, No glitching, just POOF!

Ive checked Windows system logs and no information, error IDs or dump for me to analyze. I deactivated BIOS shutdown if MB detects too high temp and still occurs but the temps I’ve monitored are not out of normal operation for 5800X3D or 6650XT and the voltage is steady at ~1.2V.

Machine is rock solid stable outside of that. Normal non-gaming temps are : 39C-50C

After PC Crashes I have to fully flip the PSU power switch for rebooting.

BIOS, Drivers, etc are all up to date. Been avoiding update to Win11

Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello

So have you checked the gaming temps?

Yes just tested and running the new MEET YOUR MAKER DEMO from Behavior my GPU Temp ran at 67 -72C (98% max load), CPU Temp 84-90C (26-69% CPU Load operating from 2.9Ghz to full 4Ghz at 66W).

Once I shutdown game for normal use operating temps drop to 54C for both

Just played Overwatch 2 and was monitoring temps which were only 65-70C but this time it crashed, it hasn’t crashed with OW2 before.

Could this be a motherboard issue??

Did further testing and .computer passed CINEBENCH R23 Stress test with 100% CPU running at 90C for 20 minutes multicore at 3.9Ghz with flying colors.

Then I stress tested the GPU with Heaven Unigine Benchmark at High and no issues. When I bumped it up to EXTREME it made it though 22/26 tests before the PC crashed.

Active power scheme: Razer Cortex Power Plan

Set your power plan to Balanced, high performance/ultimate performance is only beneficial on gaming laptops where it needs that extra boost.
Antivirus
Norton 360 for Gamers

I would uninstall your antivirus for testing at least-if not permanently. Windows 10 has a robust antivirus system, with a little common sense it is good enough without risking system hangups.

You have 3 drives, but only one of them is a SSD? Make sure you’re running your game off of your SSD, some newer games don’t run well off mechanical drives.

Furthermore, make sure all of your drives have at least 25-30% free space, this prevents temporary files from binding things up or causing crashes.

You say the PSU is brand new, did you replace it yourself?

Have you checked the connections to make sure they are all plugged in firmly and oriented in the right direction (if it’s a modular unit).

That norton 360 was a remnant. its already removed. i took out BitDefender as well. I’ll run an Uninstaller to double check.

As for the 3 Drives, the main OS drive is NVME M.2, while the 2nd and 3rd are large storage drives (3TB & 12TB).

I run most newer games off the main OS drive and put older games, media for PLEX server when i run it and documents onto the 2nd and 3rd drives.

All drives have plenty of free space. Only the main OS drive has about 30% free space.

The PSU fully modular EVGA 850W Gold PSU I did replace it myself. I do recall the modular cables being keyed to each slot but I will check them later tonight. Can’t hurt to check everything at this point.

When did the issue start? Was it after the PSU swap or something else maybe?

It could have started when i did all the upgrades but I didnt try and really play any really hardware/ GPU intensive games until the New Year’s with Bendy & The Dark Revival

Nothing is up with Speccy, the RAM is shown to be running in dual channel at1596MHz, two Xs 1596MHz = 3192MMHz which is only marginally short of 3200MHz.

Software such as Windows can crash and when it does crash you get a BSOD and when enabled a crash dmp is generated, programs or games when they crash can on occasion close to the desktop but the computer will still be 100% functional.

Hardware failure such as a weak power supply and/or overheating are not software related and when a computer for example suddenly turns off, freezes or the screen goes black etc the behaviour should be described as the “computer shut down unexpectedly” or froze etc and not as having crashed as the latter implies a software issue as opposed to an obvious hardware issue when described properly.

Having the correct info means that helpers will not be looking for a software issue when the problem is clearly hardware related.

Post a MTB log for us so we can be sure that all traces of third party AVs have gone.

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.
