    possible solutions for distance ping

heyyo rockstars which you are cus you help others 4 free
im sorry if its a bit longer than necessary its my flaw

i would like some advice about what the best solution would be
im good with hardware but networking isn’t my forte

    i have a friend i really like a lot she’s great
like me all about cars and car games
but where i live in Netherlands she lives in west Canada
so I’ve been meaning to go race with her but
i feel if there’s anything that ping will ruin its speed

so i have couple questions and am open to ideas
i also like to learn so i won’t mind any explanation of the sorts

1 does my internet speed improve this kind of ping?
2 could any specific things lessen the effects of ping ?
3 is it always going to be an issue or is it getting better ?
4 can i rent a server somewhere for this and where to go for it?
5 what about starlink? is that a good idea or do i not understand it?

again you all do this from kindness
and i want to truly give some love for you all
so i think yall awsome for helping others like this

hope you are doing great and have a great day
i look forward to seeing what will be said

    much love

let’s make sure we are on the same page first.

so you are trying to play an online game with your Canadian friend, and the ‘ping’ is terrible?
during a speedtest, what are your download speed and ping values?
same as her end, what are her values?

but generally, yes it’s all getting better as we move away from ADSL technology and Internet Service Providers (ISP) embrace fibre.
but also, equally, it’s almost totally out of your hands.
you are tied to the lowest common denominator in the traffic route from your PC to hers. so it doesn’t matter if you and her both have fibre connections, if your ISP talks to her ISP via two baked bean cans joined by a string (to elaborate the point), then that is the weakest point.

big killers of speed are line attenuation and signal to noise margin.
log on to your modem, and somewhere in there will be these values you can check.

line attenuation is measured in dB’s and the lower the value, the better, something less than 20 is desirable, and over 50 is crap. it shows the signal strength based on your distance from your nearest ISP hardware; be that the phone exchange, broadband node, DLSAM port, or however your country/ISP has the infrastructure setup, and what delivery method you use; ADSL, VDSL, dialup (heaven forbid), coax, fibre, satellite.

signal to noise margin is also measured in dB’s but this time bigger is better. it’s the measure of the lines signal strength less the amount of noise on the line.
especially relevant if your ISP uses the original copper line coming into your house. the copper can degrade, poor quality copper was used, wall sockets are corroded, etc, can all effect your SNR.

but basically both those areas are not in your control, and if the ISP does a line test on your line and sees it falls below their service level agreement, then it’s up to them to resolve.

            Bruce is spot on.

To cover another area, your distance from your provider’s servers and wherever the game servers are hosted can also affect your ping.

I don’t online game at all.
I would try gaming & if the connection is terrible then ensure that the pc is connected to the internet via Ethernet cable & not Wi-Fi.
I don’t know whether this will work with non UK providers but check out BQM:
https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broad...toring/quality it will show a visual representation of your connection.
