Losing sound and crashing when trying to bring up Avatars, Worlds and Social in VRchat.

I have a issue with VRchat, everything works great till you try and bring up Avatars, Worlds and Social. Alot of the time i just lose sound and have to pull the displayport plug from the graphics card to the VR headset, plug it back in and it will start working again, but sometimes i try to bring any of those up and the screen starts wigging out and i crash. If i’m in a very quiet world or one with no people in it, more then likely just the screen wigs out for a bit and thats all, but if i try to change woulds or avatars in a would with people in it or music playing, i am more then likely going to crash, at the bear minimum, lose sound and/or screen keeps wigging till i back out of the menu.

When i first got my headset (HTC cosmos elite, early this year) there was no issues, everything was working/playing great, about three weeks ago it started doing this and was very minor screen wigging out a bit, thought it was VR just being VR, well it just kept getting worse, it would only crash when i try to pull up avatars, then started doing it pulling up worlds, then started doing it pulling up social.

I tried playing on desktop with no headset plugged in, no difference, still does it. I had play space mover installed, took it off, no difference. I got a new headset cable for the headset, no difference. My pc has a 1660 super and every benchmark test i through at it, its doing great, i don’t know where to turn from here, VR right now is virtually unplayable.

Also to, if i have VRchat pulled up and i try to search for something on the web or whatever, sometimes it will just randomly crash out of nowhere, but if VR is not running, it will not do this.

    Any help would be great

while no experience with VR, I’d be trying to see what has changed between it working and now not working.
        upgrades, updates etc.
either some are needed or some should be rolled back.
        what is your OS?
does your rig meet all the hardware requirements for VR?

Windows 10, and yes, everything meets above and beyond reguirements, everything was working great for like 9 months. IDK much about PCs so IDK what to check to compare before and now. However, i did just find something interesting yesterday, i found a “display performance graph” in the SteamVR Status, it shows with VR headset unplugged 0.0 of 11.1 ms (90 Hz) started watching it while playing (just in my home world doing nothing it was running at 18.0 of 11.1 ms (90Hz)) soon as i pulled up avatars, it turned red and went to 33.0 of 11.1 ms (90 Hz) and crashed. So played around and found in the “resolution per eye” setting, the default was set at 80% 1800 x 2128, i put it at its lowest setting 20% 900 x 1064 (very blurry now) though now it still wigs out a bit, but i have not crashed yet and can play VR again looking up all menus, The “display performance graph” has not gone over 16.0 of 11.1 ms (90Hz) yet at this setting yet.

Could this be key to understanding what this could be causing this maybe? Now desktop mode works just fine even though VR headset is unplugged or plugged in off, so not sure why no difference there.

Could this be my graphic card about to go maybe?

Also note, i have not changed anything to my knowledge, unless of updates, i don’t know enough to play around nor want to with setting or whatnot, i know of people talking about setting things differently to better optimize their card or something, i just don’t know how to do that so never played with it, it worked great at the start, so just left it be.

            UPDATE 12/23/20

So as i was typing a long update about what was going on today with it, and crashing 3 times with VR just running in the background on desktop mode, no VR stuff plugged in, i’m not retyping all that again as it crashed mid typing. its now making that chime noise it makes when you unplug and replug the headset in but the headset is not plugged in at all.

So my guess is its Graphics Card or board or something, IDK, just did another bench test and all is good.

I’m lost at this point, hope that helps.

as you know, that chiming noise is it is detecting a USB connection/disconnection.
if it’s doing that with the VR set unplugged, it must be another USB device.
unplug all USB’s except the VR stuff and see if that helps.
otherwise, I’m tag out as I have no skin in the game with VR’s.

Only thing else is the mouse and keyboard, started VR and unplugged them, still crashed. Though i see something else that is happening that has probably been happening but just notice it now, when it doesn’t completely crash and just freezes (either with headset or desktop) i usually just restart my PC, but before i did that i noticed my mouse had froze and keyboard as well, but i was still getting discord massages, don’t know if that helps either.

I even get it to freeze with the mouse and keyboard unplugged, plugged them in and they did nothing till i restarted my PC.

Alright, so i’m hoping this helps big time, so first picture is PC on nothing on or running game wise or web so on GPU1, second pic is with VR running me in my own would doing nothing GPU2, third pic is me in a public would right after crashing GPU3.

It doesn’t show in the last pic because the readings were all over the place but the GPU was at 100% multiple times as it was crashing.

I have had no known internet issues to note, i’ve been watching my GPU and internet all day today doing other things and playing Risk of Rain and Doom eternal and it never does that erratic behavior, but as soon as i go on VR, it just repeats what’s in the pictures.

                            just to recap…

if you stay away from the VR side of things, the PC works fine?
what about the connect/disconnect USB chimes?

have you started the PC into Safe Mode and seen how it runs, you probably can’t use VR but what about the USB chimes?
have you check the the latest updates to your graphics card?
have you tried uninstalling and reloading all the VR drivers?

and lastly - a ******* of a job I know - but if after all the above you are no closer to resolving this, I’d seriously consider a fresh install of Windows.
you’ll be back to a clean slate where everything was working.
load the VR stuff first and check it’s all good then add all your software back on, one at a time, until the VR problem returns.
hopefully it won’t, but if it does, you’ll have a much narrower list of culripts to pick from.

Yes, if there is nothing to do with VR, computer is totally fine, however, no VRheadset being used and desktop only VR play, it would do the same thing, making it look like the headset had nothing to do with this.

The connect/disconnect USB chimes would go off from time to time at random, never really made any since as to why, even with VR headset disconnected.
I did not think to put the PC in safe mode.
I had done all the updates i could find for everything especially for the graphics card, it made no difference.
Yes, all VR drivers were uninstalled and reinstalled, made no difference.

So after all this, Saturday i did like a factory reset, installed all VR stuff back in and like new, VR was working great, it still was wigging out a bit when bringing up Worlds, Avatars and Social, but i was willing to live with that, However, soon as i opened a web browser, it went right but to what it was doing, like nothing had changed. I turned my PC off, tried it again, and again it was working great, but as soon as i try to open a web browser, all he!l broke loose again. So i guess for now, just don’t bring up a web browser…

Also to, after playing for say 20 minutes, if you sit on the floor when wearing the VR headset, the screen just starts wigging out bad, but as soon as you stand up, its fine.

So right now, none of this is making since to me, nor do i think it makes since to anyone else.

I have a friend coming over in a few weeks with a different headset to see if anything changes, other wise, guess its time to try other GPU or board when i get the money.
