Not sure if DX12, Drivers, or GPU. struggling to fix this myself.

Hi guys,

I hope you can help me. so ill start by telling you my hardware to see if it gives any clues.

Asus z97P - D3 (on the latest non-beta BIOS)
Intel i7-4790k unclocked
Nvidia asus strix gtx 1080ti unclocked (on the latest drivers)
cant remember my ram speed but its ballistix ddr3.
usually running DX12 - but I have messed about with this alot in an attempt to get things to work.

pretty much every game I play at the moment is crashing, 7 days to die, battlefield 4, path of exile, even wow freezes sometimes.

I have tried forcing games to use earlier versions of DX, this doesnt work (also dxdiag comes up with nothing)
I have tried all of the different regedit fixes, none of these have worked.
I have tried rolling back to older drivers
I have tried deleting geforce experience

mostly the error i get is: device removed reason dxgi_error_device_hung (and then it mentions that the drivers might be faulty etc)

im not running particularly hot or cold, GPU is usually running around 60 degrees.

please can somebody help me because im really struggling to fix this myself and I think im reaching the limit of my own knowledge.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.

Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options;

List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
List Installed Programs
List Devices (Only Problems)
List Users, Partitions and Memory size

Click on Go.

We can see a couple of issues is Speccy which may explain the issue/s so MTB log asides for now while you address these two first.

Your RAM is only working in single channel which at 800MHz is 50% of the performance that it is capable of and this will be bottlenecking the CPU, the cause of this, being that you have four memory slots but only two sticks of RAM it suggests that the RAM is not populating the correct slots, the RAM should be in slots 2 and 4 or alternatively slots 1 and 3, slot 1 is the nearest to the CPU and 4 the one furthest away from the CPU.

Windows is badly out of date, the latest Windows 10 update is version 2004 but I would suggest not updating as far as this as the update is causing a lot of folk problems, update to at least version 1909, insert the RAM into the correct slots, test then post back with an update for us.

If you have any further problems after doing the above, post a new Speccy url for us.[/COLOR]

Hi Phil,

So I just reseated my ram into 2 and 4 and the pc is now stuck in a restart loop… With no display, I tried starting without ram, I tried starting with hdd, ssd, gpu. I was holding on to the case while I reseated the ram to ground myself , and gave it a good air duster blast. its gone from bad to worse.[/color]

Restarting could mean that something is shorting out.

Have you tried putting the RAM back in the slots that you had it originally.

Few checks for you;

Remove the CMOS battery for ten minutes or so then put it back in.

Make sure that all internal connections are secure.

Reseat the GPU.

Try one stick of RAM at a time + try it in each one of the slots.

If no change, remove the add on GPU from the PCI-E slot on the MB and hook you screen up to the appropriate video port on the MB.

Make sure that your keyboard is securely connected.

Ok so I think ive got it, and im guessing this might have been what was causing my issues before, it looks like all of my ram slots aside from slot 2 are dead, so i can only use 1 stick until I can get a new motherboard. D:

Which two slots was the RAM originally in.

Does the system boot when you try each of the sticks in slot two

That does suggest bad memory slots but it is strange that the 16GB of RAM was detected by Speccy, albeit only working in single channel due to a stick being in the wrong slot.

Calling it a day now as I`m up at 5am, will try and check back tomorrow some time

yeah it does seem odd, anyway Im running on one stick of ram, and I have now updated windows to 1909, so I will see how that goes and report back later, hopefully the error doesnt persist.
