VGA Light on Mobo only after System restarts

Hi all,

I’m setting up my old pc (as I’ve upgraded) for my girlfriends birthday. It’s not been touched for about a month or two but never had any issues, I just wanted an upgrade. I added some storage since I transferred the old to my new build, but have now encountered an issue. When attempting to install windows at first, everything was fine - until windows needed to restart. After this, it tries to restart and I have no display output and a white VGA light. I can fix this with a menial restart (holding power button) and it comes back to life into the bios. However, every time I attempt to do a windows install now, I face the same issue. Every time the computer restarts, it won’t display and will give me the VGA error.

32gb (8x4) Corsair vengeance RAM

PSA.

I have switched between monitors and hdmi/display ports and still the same issue. I have also cleared the cmos.

EDIT:

I have attempted flashing the bios now as well, with still the same issue.

I have also checked to see if the GPU is detected by booting it connected to the pcie slot but with no power, my computer prompts me to plug the power cable into the GPU suggesting it is detected.

growing ever confused about this, as the gpu clearly still works and is seated correctly, but unless it’s a manual restart, it won’t display anything. The biggest concern is that restarting from the bios also causes this issue.

Would really appreciate any help because I want to get this sorted!

Never had any issue with power draw previously, do you reckon it’s just not enough for the syste?

Make sure that everything is seated and connected properly.

another thing that can be done is assembled outside of the case on a thick piece of cardboard with just what is needed to run the system.

The PSU should be enough if you have another that you could plug in to see if the same happens.

The GPU only requires a 550 Watt PSU.

Clear the CMOS see if that make a difference.

Make sure that in the BIOS the date and time are correct and do the same for Windows.

Tried this and unfortunately same result. I managed to get windows installed (just by doing cold restarts manually, but problem is whenever I restart through any software (even bios) it gives me a white vga light. Have tried everything you said and even tried gpu in second pcie slot and still the same result. Have ordered another gpu to test (will send back if it doesn’t work).

How are you attempting to do this?

Was installing through bootable media (usb) and eventually got it to work by manually restarting when needed.

If you have another system you could test the current GPU in there.

Did they happen to give a delivery time frame?

Am slightly worried if it’s something caused by the gpu that testing it in my new rig might be a bad idea - gpu I ordered should be here on Wednesday, will keep you posted. And also thank you for helping out thus far!

Aplogies, been busy! New gpu encountered same issue, but am testing on it for now. Have managed to intall windows and everything seems to run absolutley fine, but still after any sort of system restart, it hangs on the white light with no display. Have tried disabling fast boot in windows and BIOS, still nothing. Seems like an almost unfixable issue and just means i will have to restart the PC manually when it needs to reboot.

Did you install the chipset drivers?

Before doing any install, it is a good idea to go to the support page for your system. Download the drivers you are going to need i.e. chipset, sound, video, wireless, etc. WhilstWin10 has a lot of native drivers, Microsoft drivers are designed for ease of use and are NOT designed for any type of performance. Store these drivers on another usb or you can even just make a folder on your install usb when you are finished making the install usb. Copy the drivers into that folder.

When you are finished with the Windows install, then install your drivers.

How old maybe the PSU is showing some signs of aging?

You may want to pull everything out and build onto a thick piece of cardboard using just what is needed to run the system see if that replicates the issue.

You might also want to remove and reapply the thermal paste to the CPU.

Which GPU did you replace it with, or did you get the same?

Gigabyte 2070

Could be that they CMOS battery needs replacing.
