Bringing up Windows 10 with new MB

Plan to install new MB, CPU, & M2 SSD. I currently have Windows 10 on an external SSD. My question is, after installing MB can I bring up Windows 10 with the existing external SSD and then clone the M2 SSD. I assume I would have to configure my existing SSD as my boot drive. and reconfigure the M2 SSD as the boot drive for primary boot. Am I on the right track?? I would appreciate any advice .

It can be done but it is not easy and tbh it is not worth the time or trouble, you are always far better to do a clean install of Windows followed by installing the chipset divers for the MB, the storage device drivers and then if one is to be used the GPU drivers, the chipset drivers should be installed from the disk provided with the MB to begin with so as to get the system up and running before then checking for and installing any Windows updates.

There is also the OS licencing issue which Bastet brought to you attention in your previous thread here I have a canned info for this, see below;

Unless your present product key is the full retail version you cannot use it with a new MB as an OEM product key is tied to the original MB it was paired with, to use an OEM key with a new MB is detected by the Microsoft servers as software piracy and therefore you get on screen warnings etc..

Exceptions to the above are 1: If your MB is replaced under warranty and 2: If your MB is replaced out of warranty with an alternative type but same brand due to the original model no longer being available, an upgraded MB however will require the purchase of a new OS licence.

If you have a full retail disk and a product key that is not in use on another computer the OEM restriction/s is/are not the same.

The Windows 10 installed is a Microsoft upgrade of Windows 7 Pro that I purchased. Should Microsoft okay a new download??

It all depends on the type of licence key that you originally purchased, if it was the system builder/OEM type it can only be used with the board to which it was originally paired with, also worth mentioning is that when you upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 Microsoft allocates the MB that was present at the time of the upgrade a new ID number, this helps the Microsoft servers recognise a previously used licence key trying to be used with a new MB.
