Choosing the correct RAM?

It supports 2GB DDR2 DIMMs memory PC2-4200(533mhz) to PC2-6400(800mhz). . .

It also states it supports up to 4GB as 32 bit PCs cannot address a full 4.0 GB of memory. . .

So if I’m currently running Ubuntu 32bit @2GB would be better if I run Ubuntu 64bit @4GB and will my PC run smother. . . my plan is to upgrade the graphics card to a Nvidia GeForce GT-1030 or GT1050. . .

What memory stick should I order?

I don’t know about Ubuntu 64 bit but i do run win 7 64 bit on a AMD 64 with 4 g of ram and it runs good.. With those graphic cards you will need at least a 300 watt psu if you still have the original psu.. I would suggest a higher watt psu with high amps on the 12 volt and 5 volt . I would just match the new ram with the spec’s of your current ram..

Thanks for the speedy response. . . yeah I was thinking the same regarding a higher watt PSU, I had one swapped out of a Sony machine a couple years ago, this time I think I’ll try doing it myself for this HP machine. . .

Although it has 2 memory slots which held 1gb sticks each would it still run if I install 1 2gb stick. . . if so I’d like to purchase 2x2gb sticks and keep one handy in case I decide to upgrade this machine to 4gb of RAM?

Can what you are asking be done yes.

Honest opinion would not put to much money into to it the system dates back to 2008. Finding parts that are reasonable that is a different questions.

Will you notice much of a difference from running 2 GB to 4 GB? Boot not really loading programs yes you may notice some will load faster.
