How much to install a touchpad?

I’m going to be installing a new touchpad on a Dell Inspiron 5558 and I was wondering how much I should charge to do it. I am horrible at coming up with prices, so what do you guys think. I know Amazon charges around $80.00 just for “professional” installation of RAM, which is ridiculous, so I figure I should charge around that, but i’m not sure.

you could ring a couple of local repair shops and ask them for a rough estimate and used that as a guide.
the thing I have found with laptops is how much they vary with each make/model/brand.
so a 20 minute job on one could only be a 10 minute job for the same task on another, and of course, the reverse can also happen.
some are just better built with servicing in mind.

personally, for the sake of a $10 mouse, that would be my recommendation to your customer because I have had an unacceptable failure rate when playing around with those ribbon cable connectors on laptops. the older the unit, the more brittle they seem to get and I’ve broken more than I’m happy to admit.

but with all costings, you have to charge enough to cover your costs, but only enough that the client would deem the job deserved.
it can be a fine line.

Hi Brandon. Personally, I would charge $60.00 dollars to install the touchpad because that is still a fair price and some of those touchpads can be a hassle to install. I charge $60.00 dollars an hour for my personal clients so I don’t see how that price is unfair unless you are in an area where the median price of computer repair jobs are drastically less than that.

@Brandon Byrnes do you have any more concerns, or do you consider the above expert advice acceptable?

I think that is acceptable. I quoted that price to the client and also told him that the price for the touchpad runs between 35-60 dollors depending on if he wants new or used. He ended up just saying forget it, and bought a wireless mouse, which is fine. I charged him $30.00 to put the wireless adaptor in the usb port and turned on the mouse, i’m just kidding, but i’m sure thats what Amazon would charge for their expert installation .
