    What cpu to choose?

About 2 months ago I posted a topic about building a new cpu, which resulted in picking between these parts https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/HB63Ps (ram is to be exchanged on this list and an alternative list with intel 7600k, my question is, with the release of the coffee lake cpus, such as the i5-8400 for around the same price as the previous cpus, is it better if I go with the new coffee lake cpus/ryzen or the i5 7600k?

Np, I asked on another forum for a build for gaming with a budget of around £800, What do you think about this build:
        CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor (£175.19 @ Aria PC)
        Motherboard: Asus - PRIME B350-PLUS ATX AM4 Motherboard (£75.23)
        Memory: Corsair - Vengeance LPX 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-3000 Memory (£153.54 @ Aria PC)
        Video Card: Zotac - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB Mini Video Card (£254.99 @ Overclockers.co.uk)
Case: Fractal Design - Focus G (White) ATX Mid Tower Case (£49.36 @ Novatech)
Power Supply: Corsair - CXM (2015) 450W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply (£48.53 @ Box Limited)
Operating System: Microsoft - Windows 10 Home OEM 64-bit (£82.74 @ Aria PC)
Question is also, should I just get 8gigs or ram and than upgrade in the future also, is windows 7 a possibility, I am aware that microsoft will stop supporting win 7 in 2021.

Hi Rafalex. Your build looks great. You can either go with 8 GB’s at the minimum for RAM but if you can afford it get 16 GB’s as its not that much more expensive.

As for Windows 7, if you prefer Windows 7 over Windows 10 then get Windows 7 as its still being supported until 2020 with security updates and the Ryzen CPU’s will work fine on Windows 7. I just built myself a custom Ryzen system a few months ago and all the drivers work fine on Windows 7. Be warned, though that Microsoft will block Windows Updates on Ryzen and Intel Kaby Lake or newer processors so you will need to perform a workaround to get the Windows Updates to work.

If you need assistance with installing Windows 7 on your Ryzen build then I can help you if needed.

I forgot to ask, what are you using for storage? Are you looking at a traditional hard drive or a solid state drive?

I would probably get a solid state drive if I was to go with win 7 or buying 8 gigs of ram.

Ok, do you know what size solid state drive you want to get?

Maybe, like a 120GB SSD to put windows on it and than a 1TB 7200RPM HHD

Here is what I would go with then:

Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB 2.5 inch Solid State Drive - Black.

Western Digital WD1003FZEX 1 TB Performance Hard Drive - Black.

If I was to go with the 8GB of ram what ram stick models would you recommend? Also I was considering building with 1600x however the person I am building the pc for will probably not overclock, so I do not think its worth it, whats your opinion?

All of the AMD CPU’s are unlocked anyway so it depends on how much you want to spend on the CPU. If the 1600X will satisfy the needs of doing lots of multitasking and playing current games at high settings then stick with the 1600X for the CPU.

As for RAM go with this if you want 8 GB’s instead of 16 GB’s, Corsair CMK8GX4M2B3000C15 Vengeance LPX 8 GB (2x4 GB) DDR4 3000 MHz C15 XMP 2.0 High Performance Desktop Memory Kit - Black.

If you want an air cooler from Cooler Master then go with any of these, AMD AM4 CPU Coolers.

AMD’s own Wraith max cooler also does a good job and its a top cooler if you prefer that style which is what I used on my AMD Ryzen build, AMD Wraith Max RGB LED Cooler.

Not sure if this is resolved, but I had to share this just in case…

Right now you can get a Samsung SSD 2.5" 500GB, for under $150 on Newegg. See here - https://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...-373-_-Product
