    Peripherals crashing but tower lights and fans stay on

    Hey friends,

    My PC has been doing this weird thing where all peripherals shut off but the PC fans and lights stay on. Not an overheating issue as I’ve checked temps and the crashing happens even when I have nothing open. Nothing shows up in event viewer except for the kernal event 41 that shows up because I have to shutdown the computer using the PSU. Annoying part is that my hardware (except my gpu) is all new within 8 months. I noticed that this started happening after I switch my boot drive to a new m.2 because my current one didn’t allow for windows 11 update. It’s been happening more often now (1-2 times a day).

    Specs: GPU: 6800xt CPU: 7900x Mobo: Gigabyte 650 x ax Ram: Corsair Vengeance 32gb PSU: Corsair RM750x

    What I’ve tried:

    [li]Reseating and replugging everything[/li][li]Updating BIOS[/li][li]Tried plugging the PC into different outlets[/li][li]Taking PC out of the case and left it out for 6 hours and nothing crashed (this could just be chance because I had to put it back in for travel[/li][/ul]

    Let me know if there’s any more troubleshooting I could do. I always thought it was a hardware problem but it never happened on my Windows 10 a few months ago so it could be software related.

    Download then run Speccy ( free ) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

    To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

    In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

    In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

    Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

        You have a good quality PSU but it is not enough for the amount of additional storage devices and additional screens that you have hooked up.

          DDR5 5600MHz Corsair Vengeance 2x16GB. The thing with the PSU is I thought the same, but it crashes 50% of the time when I don’t even have anything open, could it still be the PSU? I also have had this PSU for 8 months and I had no issues with it, it only started happening recently.

          Edit: I also want to add that it started happening when I updated to Windows 11 and changed my boot drive. Could just be coincidence. (sorry didn’t mean to quote)

            The RAM is not appropriate for your CPU, AMD state here up to 5200MHz/MT/s and if you have EXPO/XMP enabled the RAM will get auto OCd past what the CPU can handle and the PC will become unstable.

            A junk brand PSU would have had issues from the start but your good brand will get the life sucked out of it over a period of time, the more use it gets the weaker it becomes.

            Windows 11 looks to be having issues updating, we can see a few that have failed.

            Also noticed problems connecting to the internet.

            Software such as Windows can crash and when it does crash you get a BSOD and when enabled a crash dmp is generated, programs or games when they crash can on occasion close to the desktop but the computer will still be 100% functional.

            Hardware failure such as a weak power supply and/or overheating are not software related and when a computer for example suddenly turns off, freezes or the screen goes black etc the behaviour should be described as the “computer shut down unexpectedly” or froze etc and not as having crashed as the latter implies a software issue as opposed to an obvious hardware issue when described properly.

            Having the correct info means that helpers will not be looking for a software issue when the problem is clearly hardware related.

              I have XMP disabled for this reason, I only realized it after I bought the ram unfortunately when a friend pointed it out.

              Both my monitors, audio (speakers and headphones), keyboard, and mouse all essentially “turn off” as if the computer is off. Monitors both go black and say “no signal”. The tower LED’s and case fans all stay running. The power button on the top of the case becomes unusable but interestingly the LED configuration button on the top stays functional.

              This issue occurs randomly. I could have the PC going for 12 hours and it won’t shut down unexpectedly at all, on the other hand, it could shut off 30 minutes after I boot it up in the morning. As for software or games that are running on the computer, it will shutdown 50% of the time when I just have a word document open and it will shutdown when i’m playing games the other half of the time.

                When a quality PSU overheats internally it shuts down to protect itself and the attached hardware, this is where the kernel event 41 error comes. from.

                  I was told this was due to me having to manually turn off the PSU to turn off the computer. Hence the “computer shutting down unexpectedly”.

                  I was also told by a few people that the mobo could be grounding into the case or might be an issue with an electric wire being exposed and such. I was planning on taking it out of the case for a second time (and for a longer time) to test this theory. Any thoughts on what this specific issue could be?

                    Yes but you were forced to use the PSU to turn off the computer because you could not get into Windows to shut it down correctly.

                    Not one to speculate but a bad update putting the screen into sleep/hibernation could do it, a short circuit would brick your MB and possibly other hardware.

                    Knocking off now so will leave you with the below to do ready for me in the morning.

                    Download MiniToolBox and save the file to the Desktop.

                    Close the browser and run the tool, check the following options;

                    List last 10 Event Viewer Errors
                    List Installed Programs
                    List Devices (Only Problems)
                    List Users, Partitions and Memory size

                    Click on Go.

                    Post the resulting log in your next reply for us if you will.

                        A lot of Windows errors there, some caused by the PC having to be manually shutdown but a fair few not due to this, Windows Defender has also had problems.

                        Have you been manually stopping the Windows Defender scans.
