Stop printing unwanted copies

Dear community,

I posted this question already at https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printe...es/m-p/8432272 , but posters there don’t know how to resolve the issue.

The printer is a HP LaserJet 1022n on a Ryzen 5 Windows 10 PC.

I reinstalled my Windows 10 OS and hence also the wireless network printer. Each time I ordered to print something, the printer printed extra copies, which I had to stop by removing the paper.

So I reinstalled the printer and told my PC to print a test page, without removing the printer driver though, since I didn’t know how to do that. I have plenty of test pages now. So I removed the printer from devices and restarted my computer. Each time my computer gets a chance to tell the printer to print test pages, it does so. Also when telling to print I get a message in the bottom right telling me that the document cannot be printed (which is false).

On other computers that problem does not occur and before reinstalling the OS id also didn’t on this computer.

Printing ranges of pages works. I.e. my computer tells the printer to print the range many times, not the first page multiple times before the rest. Thus when printing I should have the right number of pages in the drawer to avoid waste.

I have tried HP Smart, but it couldn’t find the printer.

I have also tried HP’s Print and Scan Doctor, but the doctor did not find any problems.

How can I install printer driver software that doesn’t try to reduce the earth’s arboreal area at my expense ?

Thanks for your help.

If you open device manager & find the printer you can uninstall the driver from there, you can also install an older driver if needed.
If you just use one connection (USB or Wi Fi) does it still print multiple copies?
Is the printer Windows 10 compatible? As there’s only seems to be a full driver for Win 8.1 you may have to use that driver & install it using compatibility mode.

The HP website does have a driver but you would need to select Windows 8.1 as the operating system. Any other driver update page would most likely offer this one & claim it is for Windows 10/11.
It is unfortunately the case that an update can make a previously working device incompatible.

Go to control panel
Open Apparaten en printers
Left click once on the printer
at the top of the window click on Print Server Properties
Click on the Drivers tab
Click on the driver and then click on Remove driver.
Reboot.
We will try to set the printer a different way.
On the printer Print a configuration page. Attach the page here
To print the Configuration page from the printer, press the GO button for 5 seconds when the printer is ready (Ready light on).

I can’t find the printer anywhere to remove, so I installed the Windows 8.1 driver from the HP website. I find no explanation on what to do next.
So I go to Instellingen (Settings) → Apparaten (Devices) → Printers en scanners
and choose ‘Een printer of scanner toevoegen’ (Add a printer or scanner)
The printer is not in the list. I tell Windows my printer is old and ask to help me find it. Windows finds it. (I don’t think this worked before. I had to add it via its IP address.)
In printer sharing I choose to not share it. (What does that do? Other people on the home network still have access to it.)

The test page prints just one page.
The previous install of the printer is still visible in software, but it doesn’t work (in LibreOffice).
LibreOffice tries to print more pages.
OpenOffice tries to print more pages.
HP Print and Scan Doctor doesn’t find any problems. It tries to print the test page multiple times.

I’ll try PeterOz’ suggestion this afternoon if I find the time.

What I want to do is get the ip address of the printer from the Configuration page.
Then remove the printer driver as per post #6 then remove the printer via control panel.
Reboot
To set ip address on print driver

In the search box next to the start button

Type in control panel press enter

If control panel is in Category mode

Click on View devices and printers – Under Hardware and Sound

Right click on the printer icon left click on printer properties

Click on the Ports tab

Click on Add Port

Click on standard TCP/IP Port

Click on new port

Click on next

Next to Printer name or ip address put in the ip address

Port name will auto fill

Click next

When the wizard has finished

Click on Finished.

Close out of control panel

I’m trying to follow the instructions from PeterOz from post 6.

Properties of the Print server of the HP Laserjet 1022n. I have the alternatives ‘Alleen stuurprogramma verwijderen’ (only remove driver) and ‘Stuurprogramma en stuurprogrammapacket verwijderen’ (Remove driver and driver packet). I have been here twice before. I don’t remember what I picked then. Now I choose to remove the packet as well.

Removing it doesn’t work :

Removing just the printer driver generates an error message telling me that the driver is in use.
After restarting the compter : same.
After removing the printer from the print queue in Device Manager : same.
The printer is not listed under ‘Printers en scanners’ in Settings.

Here is the printer configuration page :

Continuing with post 9 from PeterOz :
The printer is no longer listed in Devices and printers, so I can’t right click on the printer icon.

I restart my PC.

After telling to add the printer with IP-address, I fill this in :

Then I choose to replace the current driver :

The printer is already installed, so I install it as HP LaserJet 1022n 2. (There may also be the W8 version.)
I choose not to share the printer.
The test page prints only once.

Printing something with Foxit Reader results in the printer trying to print it repeatedly.
(No, the W8 install is not in Foxit Reader’s printer list.)

Both with Notepad and Wordpad the print command stays in the print queue and tells the printer to keep printing. I took a print screen of the error message that usually appears in the bottom right :

It says : “Printing notification

The printer cannot print Document”
