Dispersing Static Build-Up on Alienware 34 Curved Monitor?

    Hello, beautiful people.

I have an Alienware 34 Curved Monitor (AW3418DW) that functions wonderfully. The way it is positioned on my main desk makes it so you can’t really get behind it at all, so I never really noticed any issues with normal adjustments/cleanings until I decided to give my entire office a deep cleaning.

I noticed a funny feeling whenever I put my hand behind the screen, like a wave of electricity or static. If I put my hand behind the monitor for too long, it starts to tingle and feel even stranger, like it hurts but it doesn’t really hurt? I’m a bit afraid of being electrocuted so I stopped touching it altogether.

The screen itself doesn’t give off a weird wave, neither do the non-screen parts in the front. I need to move it out of the office temporarily for cleaning but I’m not exactly wanting to die (haha) so what should I do? Is there a way to safely “disperse” the charge?

after a couple of minutes, any static charge will naturally dissipate.

but the bigger issue is the effects you are noticing - that is not normal and shouldn’t be happening.
I’d be raising the issue with Dell ASAP.

Thank you for getting back to me.

I have unplugged everything after killing the power entirely outside. I waited a bit and then was able to move the monitor. Unfortunately, the warranty expired but I believe I’ve figured out the problem.

The monitor stand it came with seems to be made out of metal, and when I transported the monitor here, given how heavy everything is, I didn’t take it off. The office is carpeted, so I’m assuming the metal became charged somehow. The weird tingly wave I felt in my hand was near the cord gap thing on the stand and not necessarily the monitor itself, but I’m not entirely sure and could be wrong.

Even with it unplugged, I’m kind of afraid to touch anything back there because that feeling was pretty awful. Should I bust out the rubber gloves and hope for the best?

with it powered off, and especially unplugged, you have no fear of anything bad happening.
but again, touching it when powered on and getting a tingly feeling is not normal and should be investigated.

I’d at the very least I’d be getting a Sparky in and doing a Test & Tag on the device.
