Issue with 32in LG Ultragear monitor going black for a second or two while playing games.

I have run into an issue with my LG 32in (144hz) monitor occasionally going black for a few seconds while playing games. Watching videos, and using web browsers I don’t have an issue. I’d say that it was a problem with my gpu, but my gpu doesn’t have a problem playing the same games with my old 24inch monitor. I have reinstalled windows, graphics drivers, swapped out DP cable, and changed the cable on my other monitor from DVI to HDMI, also even lowered settings in games to the lowest possible setting, with framerate to 60hz and resolution to 1920x1080p. Any help would be much appreciated or if anyone has any suggestions.

My specs are

LG 32GK650F-B 32 monitor (the problem monitor)

My apologies,
The PSU is a Thermaltake smart series 700w PS-SPD-0700NPCWUS-W. I Should also mention that the other monitor stays on and only the LG one does the occasional weird 2-3 second black screen. Temps don’t seem to be an issue the GPU temp max is at 75 Celsius and the CPU is at 70.

No problem, as mentioned it is a regular thing and believe it or not it normally turns out to be a PSU problem and it being sub standard, which I am sorry to say looks to be the case here.

The PSU is a Thermaltake smart series 700w PS-SPD-0700NPCWUS-W.

Thermaltake have not made a decent PSU for many years and you will in fact find them on the avoid list, the model that you have was released in 2015, had a three year warranty and is not even Bronze efficiency rated, this makes it most unsuitable for supporting anything more than integrated graphics or the most basic 64-bit low profile GPUs, you will find this particular range of Thermaltake PSUs on the Tier D • Recommended only for very cheap, iGPU tier list here

If not already aware the size of the screen makes both the GPU and PSU need to work harder and being such a low efficiency rated older PSU will be causing the insides of the PSU to heat up, adding a second screen will compound the issue as this alone can increase the internal case temps by up to 10 °C

We can provide a way of testing your GPU and LG screen but I would not recommend doing so because of the present PSU.

Question, to lighten the load on the PSU have you tried connecting just the LG monitor to the GPU using a display cable to both ports, note, the ASUS monitor needs to be fully disconnected from the GPU and the wall socket, this to make sure that all the video signal from the GPU is going direct to the LG screen.

Regarding an appropriate replacement PSU.

The best quality at the lowest price for your spec of hardware that I could find is here the ten year warranty period is a sign of the confidence that EVGA have in their product.

Yes, I have fully unplugged the ASUS monitor and I still get the 2-3 second black screen with the LG monitor. Even experimented and switched to a HDMI 2.1 cable instead of a DP cable on the LG monitor just to swap the input and the problem persists. Not really sure if the input swap lightened the PSU load though.

Thank you for the recommendation! I’ll probably end up getting the 850w version of the same power supply to leave some room for upgrades.

Only other check I can suggest is to try hooking up the LG screen to another computer, a notebook that has a DP or HDMI output will do, this will confirm whether or not it is the LG screen that has the problem.

NB: If not done already, be sure to go through every single troubleshooting step in the LG user manual and before replacing the PSU, download the manual from here

I would like to add that I hooked up the LG Monitor to a different although similar in GPU power build, and ran the same games on the same resolution and it worked just fine gaming on it for a couple hours..

I also rebuilt my build with a different PSU (borrowed it from the other build, corsair 750w cx grey label) and the problem still persists much to my disappointment. This leads me to believe it’s some issue with the GPU. It for some reason or another doesn’t want to display on a 32 inch monitor under load. I even tried a 27" 2k Asus TUF monitor on it hooked up with on a dual monitor setup with my 24 inch Asus and it ran with no issues at all, even gamed for 2-3 hours and it looked great. (average fps of 94, GPU heat max at 75 Celsius same as when I tested on the LG monitor but without the occasional 2-3 second blackouts ). This is with my original build with the Thermaltake still installed. I can’t understand why the GPU will not work with this particular monitor. I plan on upgrading to a 30 series as soon as I can get my hands on one. Still disappointing that the Rx 580 doesn’t seem to work in the meantime because to be honest who knows how long it’ll take to get my hands on one of those cards lol.

If it wasn’t for the risk I would suggest testing the other build with your PSU.

Finally figured out what the problem was, turns out the LG monitor was taking too much power from the power strips that I was using. The 2 second flicker was only on the LG monitor because it was literally not getting enough power to display the frames at that resolution (Asus just has better power adapters I guess). I swapped the monitor to a different strip and outlet when I tested it on the other build hence why it worked fine. I moved my entire tower and plugged in at a different outlet with a different strip in my house and everything worked fine! I moved everything back to where it was and went and bought some new strips and plugged everything in and everything works great! Thank you for the help, as without thinking about the PSU problems to my gpu I probably would never have been thinking about the power going to my monitor. I guess I never really thought that it took that much more to power the monitor compared to a 27 inch asus with the same specs lol. Again thank you for the help, much appreciated.
