DVI vs HDMI FPS difference

Hey PC-People

First off, please excuse me if my english isn’t the best.

The Problem i’m having is a bit strange. i have my pc connected to my TV via HDMI and to a monitor with a dvi to hdmi cable wich is plugged into a hdmi to dvi adapter. (I know this is really stupid, but it was the only cable i had at the time and it never gave me any trouble, or i just never noticed)

Now i noticed, that some Games run on the TV at a locked 60 fps without trouble. The exact same games with the same settings run on the monitor with 50 to 55 fps with occasional dips below 50 fps.
Also i noticed that the cpu usage is overall higher when gaming on the monitor, which is completely non sensical to me :S

My specs are intel i5 4670k, gtx 980 and 16GB DDR3

Can anyone tell me what could be going on here? Could it really be just the wires?

Using any type of an adapter rather than a direct feed will always result in a loss of performance so your present set up would be expected to be lower than the HDMI to HDMI TV connection performance that you get, also keep in mind that HDMI is superior to DVI and that the HDMI (primary) connection takes priority over the DVI (secondary) connection.

makes sense that the adapter will result in performance loss
but can it also cause the high cpu usage?

as far as i know the chain of command is that the cpu does all the calculations for each frame, sends the infos to the gpu which does all the glitter and then pumps the frames to the display

so if the display is showing less fps because of the adapter shouldn’t the cpu usage go down instead of up?

Adding additional screens will result in not only higher CPU usage but also raised temperatures, memory and graphics usage etc, short version, adding more hardware uses more resources.

Post the brand and model name or number of the power supply (PSU).

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.
