I’m trying to import videos from my Canon Powershot A590 to the new pc that I sort of inherited. When I plug it into the usb port the computer makes a sound as if to indicate that it detects a new device, but I can’t get anything to happen. I can’t remember if I ever had any sort of installation cd, but if I did I can’t find it. The camera still works fine with my laptop pc - I think all I did was plug it into the laptop’s usb port and the software was loaded automatically(I’m quite a novice). I have attached a screenshot of the basic info on this new pc I’m using. Any help is appreciated.

What is the make and model of the camera and have you looked on the manufactures site for software?
Most cameras have removable memory cards you could remove that and if you system has a proper slot for it insert it there and get the files that way. -
I can’t even tell for sure what the model is (wish I could find the instruction manual). It says Powershot A590 IS, and on the bottom of the camera it says PC1263, and below that it says -6722305427 . Yes I downloaded CameraWindow DC 8.10.4a for Windows from the Canon website but it says no camera detected. I don’t think my pc has a memory card slot; at least I can’t find anything that looks like one - I’ve never seen those on desktop pc’s, only laptops. I tried connecting the camera to a different usb port and got the message “The usb device has malfunctioned you have connected has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it.” But it works fine with my laptop pc.Comment

Some desktop have the card readers built in.
Thank you that was going to be my next question does it work on other systems glad to hear with out issue on the laptop.
On your desktop does it have any issues reading and or accepting other USB devices?
With the camera not attached
Go into the device manager and under View select Show Hidden Devices and it is listed anywhere there?
If so then delete the reference and reboot and reattach again and see if that helps
EDIT: Try different ports does not have to be all of them just one or two. Try not using the USB 3 ports.Comment

Nope, it’s not listed in Device Manager even with Show Hidden Devices selected.
Yes, other usb devices are working just fine on this pc.
I’ve tried several USB ports and all I get is that little bleeping noise but no camera seems to be detected. On a lark I tried connecting the camera’s usb cord to a usb extension cord and plugging that in to a usb port, but no success.Comment

As a workaround you could buy a usb card reader ( they look like a flash drive and are really cheap ) and take the memory card from the camera and put it into the card reader. Had to do this to get pics from an old Canon camera I had years ago.Comment

Is there something that needs to be done with the camera. With some of my USB devices I have had to go into the settings and tell it use the USB post to access..
Have you refereed to the trouble shooting in the manual?

Couldn’t find anything about it in the owner’s manual. It seems to be working all right with my laptop so I would assume the camera settings are ok.
I guess I’ll just try the usb card reader.

Before you give up can I ask you to post a picture of your “This PC” section of your computer using File Explorer. MAKE SURE YOUR CAMERA IS plugged in first.

Here is the ‘This PC’ screen with the camera plugged in. By the way, I mean to ask which usb ports are the USB 3 ports? There are four USB ports on the front of the pc and four on the back. I tried both.Comment

Thanks for the pic, it appears your PC does not recognize your camera unfortunately. Have you tried plugging the camera into your PC before turning the camera on?
Normally cameras will install the basic usb driver when first connected, but perhaps yours is different. You could always install the software for the camera from here?? Of course choose the correct operating system..

Check you security apps aren’t stopping access to the camera. Temporarily disable your antivirus and firewall, then see if your camera will connect.
Failing that the card reader may be your best workaround.
USB 3 ports are normally coloured blue whilst USB 2 are usually black. It should not matter which USB port you usually connect to as USB 3 is backward compatible. Having said that with your camera you could try plugging it into a USB 2 port as they have been known to be more universal.

I tried disabling Norton but it still wouldn’t work. I downloaded that software from the site above with no trouble but it says ‘no webcam detected.’ I tried plugging the camera in before turning it on. No success. I think all my pc has is usb2 ports; I don’t see any blue ports.
So I inserted the memory card and get the message in the screenshot (attached). Can you tell me what to do from here? That message is rather vague.Comment

Did you disable your firewall?
Suggest you ignore that message, just click the x in the top right corner. Then open file explorer and you should see your memory card reader listed.Comment

Yeah I disabled the firewall too. Since my laptop has Norton as well I’m guessing that’s not the issue (I should’ve mentioned that before). But anyway yeah I was able to access the files in file explorer. Thanks for all your help.Comment

Probably not the slickest solution, but it should certainly give you an easy way to access your pics.
Also a good time now to backup all your stuff???
