    Keyboard misinputting keys

Hi there, I’m having an issue where my keyboard’s keys are acting up. When I try to type, for example backspace, it erases the last letter but replaces it with a + sign. Typing 7 inputs ‘v7’, space produces ‘ 9’, z is ‘z2’, s opens a menu, and various other things. Ctrl+v brings me to another tab so I can’t even copy and paste space.

My boyfriend has lent me his keyboard for now, which works on this laptop, and his computer has the same issues with the faulty keyboard, so we know it’s not the laptop but the keyboard itself.

Neither of us have any idea how this happened, it suddenly started in the middle of typing, but we don’t know what was pressed to cause it.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

    Hi,

Try checking to make sure your computer is using the correct keyboard layout, How to change keyboard layout on Windows 10.

I checked through the steps and everything is correct, I definitely have the right keyboard layout, I even changed it to the other option and the keyboard is still having the same issues.

As I said, it’s definitely the keyboard itself, not the computer, as my other keyboard works fine on this laptop.

(that said, I appreciate the suggestion and the quick response, thank you)

If its not happening with a USB keyboard then the laptop keyboard might be faulty. Does the laptop keyboard work correctly in Safe Mode? Have you tried cleaning the keyboard and making sure there is no debris that might be causing a key to get stuck?

I should have mentioned, it is a USB keyboard I’m using, the laptop keys themselves do not work. This USB keyboard is having these issues, but another that I’ve tried is not. I’ve checked for debris but I’m sure that’s not the case, since it suddenly started affecting multiple keys at once.

If its happening with that particular USB keyboard then try it in another computer and see if the same behavior occurs. If it does then that keyboard is faulty and it will need to be replaced.

The same behaviour occurs across different computers, but it’s never had an issue up until an hour ago when the problem started suddenly, surely it wouldn’t just break for no reason?

Keyboards can wear out and break just like any other electronic device. So if it just started happening and you have plugged the keyboard into different systems and it does not type correctly then the keyboard has worn out and you will need to replace it. Nothing else can be done as electronics will wear out. Its just a question of when it will break.
