    Adding a drive to NAS

Not sure which forum is right for this, so apologies if I have it wrong.

I have an LG N2A2 NAS. (Old but it works). It’s a two bay device but only has a single 2TB drive installed and is 50% full.
I want to add a second 2TB drive and set it to Raid 1.

    My questions are
How long, typically, would it take to mirror the second drive to the first? (1TB of data)
More importantly, can I still use the NAS during the mirroring?

    Thank you.

    I have a 2 bay Netgear NAS unit, with 2 x 2TB drives.
replaced one about 18months ago and the re-sync took around 6-8 hours (about 1.25TB’s).
although the docs said I could still use the drive, I didn’t want to give it any reason to spit the dummy so I did it with the PC off and let it do its thing over-night.

      Thanks Bruce,
I was a little worried about any issues that may arise - formatting the new drive etc. and not being able access the data. On reflection, I’ll work from my backup drive if necessary and let the NAS do its thing. Over night should do it then. i have just 1TB to mirror.

      appreciate it. Thanks

don’t know about your LG, but I’ve used Dlink, Netgear and Synology in the past and all have looked after everything themselves.

from initial setup, replacement drives, formatting - what have you.

all I’ve ever needed to tell it was the RAID type I wanted.

This is my 2nd NAS, both hand-me-downs (or is it hand-me-ups if son to father?). The first was a LaCie that went south on me and now I have two unusable drives. But that’s a topic for my next thread.
Just checking my backups now before I install the drive later this week.

thanks for your input. It’s appreciated.

            no sweat, glad to help.
and just to pre-warn you before you do anything stupid with those two unusable drives - don’t put either of them into another NAS box.
the box will treat them as new drives (to it they are) and reformat them. you probably don’t want that!
