Dual screen

Hey there,

Until my parts come ready for VR, I decided to try and make use out of an old LG monitor I had laying around. I was hoping to do a dual display, so I can happily surf the net whilst playing. However, I’ve encountered a problem, the LG monitor constantly says “Check Signal Cable”, I’ve switched the cable for a new one but with no avail. I have a feeling, it might be the VGA to DVI (D) that I’m using.

I’m currently running my main screen on a HDMI lead, this monitor has no problems whatsoever, I’ve gone into screen resolution trying to identify the other monitor but it doesn’t detect it at all. I am using a GTX 770, I’ve tried both DVI ports and nothing seems to be working. I had a look online and apparently it’s possible, but, I don’t seem to be having any luck.

Any suggestions?

Hi Allan. Did you try using the monitor with a different computer that uses the DVI input?

Did you try using your main monitor using a DVI cable to rule out a faulty cable or port on the video card?

I realise that my original post was not thoroughly detailed, you have my apologies. I’m not using a VGA → DVI cable, I’m actually using a VGA → VGA, with a VGA → DVI connector, in my rush to type, I just typed VGA → DVI, it was my mistake.

I have just checked the monitor on another rig I had in storage, the monitor worked fine, with no problems. Sadly, however, I was unable to test it with the DVI connector as I do not have the required ports on the other computer. I must admit, from the get-go, my feelings were that it was the DVI connector which would be at fault. Though, I shall add here, that I have seen this very monitor, and peripherals, working on a different machine, though that was over a year ago. It did not cross my mind that the GPU, could be to blame, but surely two ports could not be at fault?

I mainly came to see if I COULD use a VGA → DVI connector, but alas, my detailing skills are lacking, and was unable to correctly portray the question I wished to ask. I thank you for your swift reply however.

Can you clarify, your main monitor you are using just an HDMI cable correct? On the other LG monitor are you connecting a VGA cable from the monitor and then using a DVI adapter to connect the VGA cable and connecting it to your DVI port on the video card?

That is all correct.

What display outputs does the LG monitor have?

I’m not exactly sure on maximum but the recommended output is 1600x768.

I have ordered a VGA to DVI cable, it was only cheap so I thought I might as well try that to see if the little adapter was the problem. Though whenever that will arrive is beyond me, it’s meant to be here already.

I tried the LG monitor as my main monitor, but I was still getting the “Check Signal Cable”.

Cable came today, as well as my replacement cooler, I felt like a kid in a candy shop (I am easily excited).

Hooked the new cable up and I now have dual screen, I’m kind of glad that it wasn’t the GPU slots, kind of had me worried (though that’s being upgraded this month too). It was the DVI adapter thing, I dont get how it just sudden;y “stopped working” though, meh, it’s in the bin now anyway.
