Transferring data from device by ethernet by wi-fi; how can I do this?

Hi I’ve got a question I’ve searched all over on the internet but cannot find any answers.

I have a DVR and with wi-fi. When I want to transfer the recordings from the DVR I normally just use my PC, type in the IP address of the DVR and download the recordings via wi-fi.

The wi-fi has now stopped working on the DVR. So I cant get my recordings via wi fi any more. There is an ethernet port on the DVR too, so Ive connected it but my windows 7 PC doesnt give me any indication that the two are connected; and therefore I cannot access the DVR. I was expecting it to be similar to connecting a device to PC via USB, but evidently it isnt. How can I resolve this? Surely if a DVR is capable of transferring files via wi-fi then it should be able to do the same thing via ethernet?

EDIT- Solved. Discovered that once connected it gets another IP address. Mods please feel free to delete this thread or lock as solved.
