    External hard drive?

Hey everyone, sorry if I posted this in the wrong section, but I don’t really know what else this fits under so anyway,
I don’t store my pictures and videos on my computer, and Ive always used an external hard drive. For a really long time, I’ve used a WD My Passport Ultra (an old model of it) and while it still works good, I think there’s a better option.

I’ve been considering a WD My Cloud 4tb external hard drive that I’d connect to an Ethernet jack in my room to use as a server for all of my pictures/videos so that I can access them anytime I want to, but what I fear with this is even if the computer I’m accessing the drive from is connected to the same network via Ethernet, it will be too slow for my liking, and I’m worried that if I need to access my pictures or videos and I don’t have a router handy, I won’t be able to use USB to connect it straight to my computer. The other concern I have that is pretty little, is that I don’t know if the drive automatically sleeps like the WD My Passport does during inactivity, and I don’t really like the idea of the drive running all of the time.

Another option I’ve been considering is getting a rugged 2.5" drive enclosure with USB 3.0, and then I’d put a high-capacity WD Black Mobile performance hard drive in it to have a fast, though expensive, place to store all of my pictures and videos.

Then maybe, I could also get a 3.5" external drive enclosure with an Ethernet or Ethernet and USB interface, and throw a WD Red NAS drive in it, although something tells me WD is already using their NAS drive in the My Cloud.

I don’t really know. I just want a fast, easy, and reliable way to access and store all of my pictures. What do you all think?

      Hi Nick.
WD’s My Passport range had a recent refresh to include up-to 3TBs in a 2.5-inch form factor. With USB 3.0 for native hard drive speed.
I have a different type, but the above looks the way to go. It is USB connected, and I would only connect when needed.

Hi Nick. You could always get this hard drive enclosure, Sabrent USB 3.0 to SATA External Hard Drive Lay-Flat Docking Station for 2.5 or 3.5in HDD, SSD and then get this internal hard drive, WD Black 1TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD1003FZEX.

I thin kI might just go for this: 1TB Silver My Passport Ultra | Western Digital
Because while I do want a rugged 2.5" drive enclosure like the ones offered by StarTech or NexStar, the biggest WD black mobile drive I can find is 1tb. I don’t want a big ol’ 3.5" drive and drive enclosure that I have to haul around everywhere, and the My Passport Ultra is 4tb of portable 2.5" storage from my favorite HDD company, WD.

I have 7 Western Digital external hard drives. One is a huge, very old 80GB one. The other 6 are the small portable ones. Three of them are My Passport Ultra (500GB and 2 - 2TB). I’ve been happy with them. They are the older smooth design case.

I didn’t get anything larger than 2GB because I’m not sure if all the computers could see a 3TB external drive. Anything I get needs to be usable on all 7 computers in the house.

I have one of the older design WD My Passport Ultra drives with 2tb of capacity, it’s the smooth design with silver plastic around the edges. 2tb is filling up for me quicker than I thought it would because of all the GoPro footage I import, and the only computers I can imagine myself using a 4tb external HDD on are all new Windows 7+ systems so I think I’ll be fine?
