One of those printer niggles (HP Deskjet 1000)

I know this may seem a bit cheapskate, but I’m getting nagged to death by ‘She who must be obeyed’!

Yesterday morning, she decided she wanted to print off some photos to send to a friend (friend can’t receive email or other electronic messages). She managed to print one off (at full A4 size!) and I pointed out to her that she could maybe think about using a bit of sense and put up to 4 photos on the same page. I took over on her bloody awful Windows8 laptop and showed her how to do it.

At that point, she got TWO photos on a page and pressed print and nothing happened, other than a window popping up telling her that, suddenly, the cartridges were incompatible!!

One thing to bear in mind is that the printer is very seldom used - probably no more than once in two weeks - so I considered that, perhaps, one or both cartridges had dried up. So I went through the rigmarole I’ve used very successfully in the past. I dripped water onto the business end of each cartridge and wiped them very carefully, checking that I got a colour or black row of ink when I gently pressed them on to tissue.

I refitted the cartridges, cleared the print queue (she’d pressed print several times assuming that the printer hadn’t heard her the first time!) and still no response other than ‘non-compatible cartridges’.

I plugged the printer into my own infinitely more manipulative XP laptop, cleared the print queue again and then pressed ‘print’. Same result!

I then uninstalled the printer on her computer. Then I plugged it in again to allow it to reinstall, but no change.

It’s a very cheap printer, I know, but we don’t use it that often and really it more than suits our needs. The cartridges ARE refurbished ones, but I would expect them to work since I buy them from a reputable source.

    Any tips?

Here’s the troubleshooting page which really doesn’t offer anything useful.
    http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/...ent/c03333457/

New HP printers are very fussy about using new, original HP carts. (Thank goodness we have 3 old HP printers that don’t complain. The two newer ones 1055 and 1510 give us more headaches in the short time we’ve owned them than the other three combined over decades.)

The only workaround I can suggest is to take the camera card and have the photos printed at a store. If the photos are on the computer and not on a card, copy them to a card or USB stick.

It’s worth noting here too that for this printer to work BOTH ink cartridges need to be installed and according to their built in electronics have sufficient ink, etc. This means if only one cartridge goes bad the printer just wont work at all. Unfortunately you are not to know which one. The easiest way may be to try another pair of cartridges.
