I’m looking to buy a replacement external CD/DVD writer for my ASUS notebook. This being so, I gather from several online queries that such writers are nowadays just ‘barebones’ kits. That’s to say they no longer have any software/firmware (like Nero Essentials) bundled in with them. I’m faintly astounded by this apparent state of affairs. . . or am I simply behind the times?

It’s been that way for a long time.
I bought a portable burner in 2011 or earlier. It came with no software. Truthfully, I didn’t need any because I already have programs to do what I need.
I rarely burn CDs or DVDs. I prefer mp3 and avi files which I put on sd cards and/or USB sticks. -
The last time I downloaded any CD burner freeware (not XP), I also managed to infect my then brand new laptop with that filthy Conduit Search browser malware. It really screwed up the machine and it cost a bit to put it right again. I haven’t been back since. . . but I’ll try CDBurner XP and see what gives. Thanks for the link.Comment

These are burning tools sorted by popularity
Download Burning Tools Tools for Windows - MajorGeeks
Read the notes because if it comes bundled with something, the owners of MajorGeeks will post exactly what is included.
The downloads are clean but if the program designer has something added, then it will be noted.Comment

No, nothing on that score, at least not yet. Right now I’m plagued with other issues. . . like why can’t I do screenshots any longer? Also, why have I got ebay as my google homepage? Why too am I now denied access to my email inbox. . . other than getting google to phone me back with the security codes?? (the last issue is all the more galling now that my mobile phone has for reasons best known to itself decided to part company with me). In short, I’m not a happy bunny right nowComment
