unexpected account registration error in google hangouts

I have been reading thru the help forums for this one.
Have uninstalled, installed, cleared cache and data
nothing has worked. I have a Moto e phone running
Android 4.4.4 Any help appreciated. Works fine on
my laptop.

Thank you for your reply. I did find this post earlier and tried what was suggested but it did not work for me. I also found another about going back to a previous version which I tried but got the message that it would not install. I have the latest version. ugh. Yes, that is the problem.

Which version of Hangouts are you using?

You could be facing the same issue as the other user that Hangouts is no longer supported in the older version of Android.

Added: When was the last time the phone was totally shut off and turned back on?

About a week ago it shut down when it ran thru the battery.

Try doing a manual full shutdown of the phone and reboot.

Sorry, I was away a week. I did an uninstall of both hangouts and the dialer. Then I re-installed hangouts and it asked me to update to the latest version. I couldn’t find a way around that so I did it and re-installed the dialer and now it works! Thank you for all the suggestions/help.
