The high end phones do have a quality camera though ? Reviews of the google pixel tell me that selfie quality sucks

By telephone standards yes, not by quality camera and quality camera lens standards. Sure phone cameras have come a long way, but a photo taken with a phone or a quality slr camera is simply not comparable.

Its just for selfies and stuff on the social side, no pro use by any means

iPhones? They slightly behind ?

Ignoring the Note 7 controversy, I still wouldn’t buy a Samsung phone again after the performance from my, and my SO’s Note 4s. They honestly have great build quality, and the camera is on-par with an iPhone, but with the Pixel as an option now, you may be better off with a more vanilla Android OS than the nightmare known as TouchWiz. Nova Launcher makes it a bit more bearable, but not by much.
