2nd Battery Now That Dies Within Days While Laptop Is Not In Use

I have a HP ProBook 450 G3. I have had this laptop for a few years now and I’m on my 2nd battery. I had the first battery for about 3yrs and it started losing it’s charge when i would have the laptop turned off and not being used for awhile. I figured it was just old since supposedly laptop battery start going bad after about 2yrs. I bought a new battery and now it’s doing the same exact thing but even worse. I had the battery fully charged and didn’t use the laptop for about 5 days. i just turned it on and the battery is dead. I think I’ve also had this battery for about 2yrs but it’s been doing this for probably the last year so i don’t think it’s a case of the battery getting old. I can do a battery health report but honestly those never give me any useful info because they don’t go far enough back, i just did one and it said three days but only showed today. Is there a program that i can use to get a proper battery report and maybe you guys can help me? I know off-brand laptop batteries aren’t expensive but I’d like to know if this is a problem with my battery or a problem with my laptop. Also fyi I did make sure it’s not going into hibernate or sleep mode when i power it down and close the lid.

when was the ‘new’ battery manufactured as that could vary greatly from the purchase date?

with lithium batteries, it’s not how often they are used that counts, it’s when they were made, as the lithium oxidises regardless of use.

honestly I have no idea. The replacement battery is a generic one from Amazon. It doesn’t have a manufactured date. I even tore the battery pack open, I know not the smartest, but I have experiance with 18650 batteries (I vape) so I knew there wasn’t a huge risk of explosion or anything, lol. The 18650 batteries don’t even have a date on them the only thing on the batteries in INR18650E and 26HDDE 2 1ERB6DN. I did try another health report app called BatteryInfoView which is open source and it said the health\capacity is at 87.1% of the original capacity which atleast to me doesn’t sound bad for a battery pack i bought nearly 2yrs ago. i still run some tests on the battery if you need, I didn’t destroy the housing when I took it apart.

you may never know why, but on a two’ish year old battery, in my experience that falls in the zone of the battery just not holding charge anymore.

getting the battery repacked with new 18650’s is the only way to know how fresh the cells are.

I’ve pulled many battery packs apart, from laptops to drills, and there’s usually one bad 18650 cell in the group that has failed and throws the battery management system out when recharging.

I know it’s kind of a crapshoot when it comes to buying replacement batteries especially for a laptop that is this “old” Ive tried finding an official HP laptop battery, everywhere but asking HP, lol. I’ll shoot them an email and see what they say but I’m guessing they probably don’t make batteries for this model anymore. So I might be stuck just buying another generic battery.

Just checked and HP wants $100USD for a genuine HP battery, and that is not happening.

I’d be checking for a local battery repacker myself if you’re dead set on getting another battery.
here in Oz, we have a franchise called Battery World that does this service, and dedicated mobs like https://www.betterbatt.com.au/ that put new cells in laptop battery packs.

I have used OEM and non-OEM batteries and never notices any issues. as long as you put tin the research.

Yes, i think I’m going to just go with a non-OEM battery and this time not get the cheapest one I can find on Amazon. It looks like BatteryNinja seems to be a pretty legit battery seller so I think I may go with them although I would like to buy a higher capacity but unfortunately they only offer the standard capacity.
