I’ve just bought a Dell XPS 9560 laptop in great condition. I’ve updated all drivers using Dell Support Assist. I also installed the latest driver for the internal NVIDIA GTX 1050 graphics card. I’m really pleased with the laptop. It enables me to run an important program which my older PC’s couldn’t. I’d like to connect two external monitors. The laptop has an HDMI port, which I connected to one of the monitors via the monitor’s HDMI input. The monitor has always worked perfectly from the HDMI output on my desktop PC. What happens with the HDMI-HDMI connection from the laptop is that the monitor searches for a HDMI signal but can’t find it. The monitor then shuts down. I’ve tried three different HDMI cables with the same result, no signal detected. I then connected my desktop PC to the monitor via HDMI and the signal was detected immediately. Another thing which I did was to connect to a monitor from the laptop’s HDMI port using a HDMI to DVI cable. It worked perfectly. So I can’t figure out why I can’t get a connection from the laptop to the monitor using HDMI-HDMI. Any advice would be appreciated.

Going out on a limb here.
Some HDMI monitors need to be the 1st monitor.
Because you are using a laptop the laptop monitor would br the 1st monitor
Your HDMI monitor is the second monitor
I doubt if there would be any bios settings that would let you make the inbuilt monitor the 2nd monitor -
another limb…
perhaps HDMI versions?

you may be using different cables, but what version are they?
