Hello. When I start up the laptop, it gives the error: “check cable cannenction! Pxe-m0f: exiting intel PXE ROM.” I changed the battery of laptop a few months ago and it runs on windows 7. Strange thing is that sometimes it does not give me the error and I can work with my laptop and sometimes it gives me the error and the laptop restarts. What should I do?

You commonly get such an error when the BIOS does not detect a boot device during the power on self test (POST) so it would be wise to back up your important data from the HDD in case it is failing.

You mention having changed the CMOS battery, after doing this did you set the HDD as the first boot device in the BIOS.

The PXE device btw should not be enabled as a boot device in the BIOS unless the computer has been set up to boot from a network connection.

Download then run Speccy (free) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.

In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.

Makes what I spotted all the more likely as to be the cause then.

The below is information concerning your HDD, it is low on free storage space on the C: partition where Windows lives + the drive is running hot, the latter could be as a result of the low amount of free storage space.

For Windows to be able to run efficiently and to be able to update you need to have between 20 and 25% of the partition or drive available as free storage space at all times, if you don`t you risk Windows becoming corrupt or not being able to update which puts you at risk of malware attack.

Data only storage devices should not be allowed to get any lower than 10% of free storage space of the full capacity of the drive/partition on the drive, this also to avoid data corruption.

After downloading speccy I noticed that I am running low on C so I deleted a lot of stuff. now 39 G of 150 G on C is available. I also noticed I had not downloaded and installed any updates for a long time so I also let that happen and I can already sense that this restarting problem is happening less often. But for example if I turn off my laptop right now and I decide to turn it on immediately, there is a high chance it will restarts. I notice that my laptop needs to cool down and it is hot most of the time. I also noticed that when my laptop restarts and does not work properly, I don’t have any HDD option in my bios setup. It is only SATA ODD and network boot. But when my laptop works properly, I have HDD option in my BIOS.

When things get hot they expand and what could be happening with your HDD is that when it is hot the electrical contact points are being separated.

I have done most of these things mentioned in the link but things are not different. today i had a lot of problems again to get my laptop work properly. my theory is that the new battery is causing problems but then again if i try to use my laptop with out the battery and with charger, things are not different.

The HDD looks ok, a bit warm but still ok.

Something that I did notice is that you have the Windows Power Plan set to Balanced, because your notebook has a dedicated GPU it should be set to High Performance or the GPU will not get enough power to function, this unlikely to be the cause of the HDD occasionally going missing though.

Question, how come you have not yet upgraded to Windows 10 for free while you still can.

I had never used balanced option before yesterday. I just did it because I thought it might help with overheating problem. Today I even used power saver option but the problem with power saver is that after a few minutes, the laptop goes to sleep and locks and I have to login but then windows does not come up and I have to shut down the laptop by holding the power button. The same problem I am struggling while turning on the laptop.
I am just comfortable with windows 7. I installed it last year and it has been working well.

Apart from the HDD getting hot when it has been in use there is zero wrong with your computer, only two other suggestions, get yourself a notebook cooling pad and preferably one that is mains powered rather than USB and if all else fails remove the HDD, give the inside of the notebook and the HDD contacts a proper clean with canned compressed air then refit the drive and see how it goes.

OK. Why should my cooling pad be one with mains powered rather than USB? I found something online which works with USB.
