    VERY VERY SLOW LAPTOP

I have inherited a laptop note book(full sysytem details attached) which is so slow is unbelieveable, taking over an hour for the windows logo to appear and then another 4 hrs before the desktop and icons appear.
There are over 15 items in the system tray, I have manged to do a chkdisk, followed by a memory check both of which COMPLETED THERE TASKS IN NORMAL TIME.
Some of the items such as Avast and spyware I have managed to delete, but the other thing is that in the security section it states no antivirus is installed?

Explorer although installed will not run?

when eventually it settles down I can activate the control panel and device manger, but it has been on now for 2hrs and no sign of desktop.

Windows 7 is legally installed, and I wonder if thre is any way I could do a clean install of win 10 just to get the laptop up and running.

if it was possible to resurrect this machine it would be ideal for my daughter.

What was the outcome and what switches did you use?

What size is the Hard Drive and do you know if it is a SSD?

          Forget about Windows 10.
          https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers...ook-pc/3687778
drivers for XP, Vista and 7.
The laptop might have been upgraded from XP to 7.
          This page
          https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01531960
shows it came with XP or Vista.

You have 2 choices: a) to a clean install of Windows 7 b) run a linux live USB stick and if that is a lot speedier, install linux on it.

As far as the no antivirus, you removed Avast so eventually Windows Defender will take over. That’s how Win 7 works.

Have you tried safe mode? Does the desktop load?

The desktop loads after about 30 minutes, icons are slow to open, yes I tried safe mode.
One of the suggestions made was :run a linux live USB stick and if that is a lot speedier, install linux on it.

I think in this instance a clean install would be the best option,Im not certain what"Linux" is?But if it puts a useable operating sysytem on the laptop thaty would be ideal

I apologise for the delay, few health problems this end!!

Ok i was assuming you would go with win 7 install. Maybe @Rustys could help you more with linux.

Quite honestly at the moment I am unable to give my full attention to the problem.I chose Rustys solution thinking it might be easier and do a clean install wiping out all the rubbish in the meantime.
But if you have no objections ,I am at the least to say apprehensive,so can we put it on hold and pick it up later.Thank you for all of your help
