Laptop problem

Hello everyone,

Yesterday while I was watching a video, some green stripes appeared on my laptop screen and then it shut down. I tried to boot it again and it started beeping with black screen or regular boot screen with the stripes again. Most of the times it was beeping with blackscreen. After many bootings, it finally booted regularly but cpu seems to be in high usage without obvious reason. Surely, my a/c adapter is kinda faulty because if it will be moved a bit, my laptop will shutdown instantly (baterry is dead). However, it is the first time that i faced this kind of problem. Also, there was a blue screen of death in some of the booting screens. let me know how can i find the log and send it to you for further information. My laptop is a dell inspiron 15r (windows 7) Thanks in advance.

none of this will be good news…

it sounds like it could be a few things.
first up, I’m guessing it is an old’ish laptop?
so the battery is dead and the power cord is ‘loose’ - how many times has the unit lost power and abnormally turned off mid-use?
it could be anything from dust build-up, over-heating, corrupted files, failing hard drive or faulty video card. even all of them!

those green stripes would have me looking at pulling the cover off the unit and trying to remove any dust.
while there, remove, clean and reseat the memory chip(s).
if it is the video card, those are almost always integrated into the motherboard of laptops so no cleaning or replacing of that will be feasible.

does the laptop start OK after it has been left to cool down for a couple of hours?

one priority would be to get it to boot (at least in Safe Mode) and get your data copied off it. or simply remove the hard drive and place it into an external enclosure for connection to other PC’s.

personally, if it’s more than 5 years old, I’d be budgeting for a new unit.

Hello Bruce, you are right in everything. Its a really old laptop. However, after your comment and due to the fact that i got no clue regarding hardware fixing, i delivered my laptop to a technician. I will let you know when i will get the first diagnostic results.

good choice, especially if you don’t know what you are doing yourself in that department.
hopefully if he is any good, he will tell you up front the bad news, cost of repair, and maybe that it’s not justifiable and charge you nothing (or little) for it.

Hello again, well they told me that my graphics card was the problem. They did a “reflow” procedure and kind of extended its life. Hopefully, it will be enough time in order to replace it. Thanks, everyone. You could mark it as solved.
