@Malnutrition - no, I get stuck in a boot loop with a blue screen saying your computer needs to restart. And the error is Inaccessable boot device.

Download the Ultimate Boot CD for windows.

        Or the Falcon Boot CD

Start the video below at 53 minutes.

Follow the instructions for using the Ultimate Boot CD.

@Malnutrition - the computer does not have a dvd drive - so I used RUFUS to create a bootable USB for UBCD. I hit escape at start-up and select to boot from USB (I know it will work because this is how I ran FRS) - but the computer will still boot to the hard drive?

I also tried the tut from here - and the flash drive is still not being booted from

Making an Ultimate Boot CD (UBCD) β–· Bootable USB

Same issue using FalconFour on a USB

          EDIT β€”>
So I removed the drive from the β€œoriginal” laptop, and plugged it into a secondary laptop, was able to boot FalconFour UBCD and attempted to run the Fix_HDR command - this failed, as it seems the computer is not even recognizing the hard drive anymore…
If I opened up file explorer all I would see is
          B: RAM Drive
          C: F4UBCD
          X: F4UBCD

The C: and D: partitions of the drive are gone. If I plug the hard drive into the USB caddy and connect via USB to a desktop - all files are intact and I can navigate to the files and copy/paste however I need.

Ok, sounds like the HDD may be failing. If it were my machine, I’d grab the important files with Falcon. Then try and reformat.

@Malnutrition β†’ I connected to my caddy and plugged into a desktop computer and have copied over the entire contents of F: (OS) - (folders like PerfLogs, Program Files, Program Files (86), Users, Windows etc) β†’ that should encompass anything that I would need (i.e. My Pictures, My Music, My Documents etc) - correct?

Make sure you can access everything you need when you boot the machine you copied the items over to. Only when you are sure that everything you need is available without the question hdd is attached. Then you go from there

@Malnutrition β†’ I have verified I can access all the files on the desktop hard drive that I copied over to, with the laptop hard drive in question disconnected.

Are you recommending a fresh install of Win 10 on the hard drive? Should I run DBAN first or just delete all partitions from the installer of Win 10 and format the drive from the installer?

I would, and if you do not have a copy of windows you can grab it from here.

@Malnutrition β†’ should the install pick up the Prod Key from the Motherboard? The COA sticker has long been torn off the bottom of the laptop and I have no idea what the Prod Key is.

Not sure to be honest. I think so, but let me tag someone that will know.

@Malnutrition β†’ so in the hopes of not having to run DBAN and fresh install, I attempted to boot the drive again, and it continued to fail with the same error. I went into advanced options and selected restore to an earlier point. In doing such, the drive will now boot!! It will load windows and allow me to navigate once the desktop loads!

It is still a bit sluggish right now, but if we have cleaned all that we can with FRST then a fresh install may be my only option to remove the residual files that are causing the sluggishness.

The motherboard does not store any keys. There are several variables here depending on whether this was an upgrade, or an OEM copy, or a retail one. At install time Windows takes a bit of a snapshot of your system and stores it away, and should you make changes it deems excessive may flag the OS as unactivated.

Have a look HERE, if you can still access the hard drive remotely you may still be able to save the day. Read the section

                            Good luck

Sorry to butt in again but can I suggest whilst the drive is responding ATM that you do retrieve the product key. May save some grief later on.
