Laptop won't stay powered on

Hi,
I’ve got a toshiba c670-14n. It doesn’t have a battery but has been used on AC power. The other night I turned it off as normal but now when I turn it on after about 5 seconds it turns off again. I have changed the ram for some I know is working and even used the other slot. I have cleared CMOS. I have removed the HDD too and held down the power button for 60 seconds with no ac plugged in.

Can anyone help me to try and resolve this?

It could be several things:

1. Port that the cord plugs into is bad
2. Charger, even though it isn’t charging a battery is bad
3. Cord from charger to wall is bad.

The easiest thing to try and isolate the problem is to try a different charger and cord.
These are the specs I found for your AC adapter:
input voltage : autosensing AC adapter (100/240 V) for worldwide usage
output voltage : 19 V
output current : 3.42 A

Then elsewhere I also see maximum output power 65 watts.

Of course, if it is the port itself that is bad, the new adapters won’t keep the laptop on either.

If it were my laptop, I’d take it to a Mom and Pop computer shop and have them test with a different adapter to see if that is the problem.

This isn’t your model but it gives you an idea of how to disassemble and replace the port

Input: 100-240v
Output: 20v, 3.25A
I know there is a output difference but would it cause it not to boot?

I’m happy to change the power cord.

I’d say no, it should boot.

I suspect the port where the cord/adapter is plugged into is the problem. It can’t tell that it is getting power so the laptop never powers up.

Couple of questions if I may;

When the notebook does power up, do you hear the internal cooling fan running.

When the notebook powers up and then shuts down, do any of the notebooks LEDs remain lit or blinking.

A word of caution, do not continue to use the 20V output adaptor, more amps does no harm as the MB will only draw what it needs but overvoltage can damage your hardware.

Solved this one. I took the case off and cleaned it all out from dust and crap and tried a new ac unit and it all works.

Just gotta get a batter now
