Electricity malfunction - Charger\Laptop

Hi everyone!

I am having a issue with my Alienware Mx18 laptop. When I plug-in my charger and the blue LED lights on the cable is on and I put in the charger on the back of the laptop it straight away generates a smoke\poision smelling effect and the electricity of the cable cuts as soon as I plug the cable into the laptop.

Could anyone know what is wrong or what I can do? I cant charge my laptop and I cant start it up.

Do you think the battery is dead or is it an issue of the charger internal port?

Any ideas?

Is the system under warranty?
If yes Contact Dell before you end up doing irreversible damage to the laptop or burn down the house. There is a short some place that must be repaired.

Thanks for your reply Rustys and continued support. The system is unfortunately not under warranty, bought it a couple of years ago but never refreshed the warranty. I bought it from the US; I’m not sure if or how long it could take to repair it at Dell.

It was wierd because it never was like this with the laptop. Suddenly when trying to put in the charger cable on the back around 45% halfways there comes a clicking sound and the blue LED light disappears and a very tiny smoke generates but enough for the nose to get irritated and it smells pretty poisonous. The charger cable works but once trying to insert it the electric cuts. Must be a bad vibe from the charger output or something.

if it’s smoking it would be a short out on the main board or if you are lucky some time is can a short in the socket it self. A tech would need to test the power adapter and the power port inside the laptop and inspect the main board for damage. Depending on what has gone wrong it might not be economical to repair, see if you can get a quote done cheaply or I’d look at getting an new one and take hard drive out of old one and plug in via usb with sata hdd adapter to transfer data to new one
