Screen crashing when playing games (not pc crashing, only screen)

Hey everyone,

The problem :

When playing games, sometimes the screens crash to black and say something like “no input found” as if my pc was disconnected from the screens. I have two screens, they both do that if the problem occurs, and i play on 1 screen at a time of course (but both crashes). To regain control over my pc i have to do a hard reset with the main power button.

At first i thought i had a problem with my graphic card and that the problem happened because i play with a too high of a resolution, so i started to play with low res, it worked for a while, but eventually it happened even in low res.

The problem occurs while playing usually “big” games like for example Baldur’s gate 3 or New World. It does not happen when playing Sims 4 (in low res) or an indie game like Hades 2. And it can happen 2min into the game or 20min (but usually pretty quick).

I don’t know since when i have this problem, I bought my new graphic card early 2023 (Gigabyte geforce RTX 3070 Eagle OC 8G), and when Cyberpunk: Phantom Liberty DLC came out in september 2023, i played like a 100 hours with my new GPU in ultra with RTX on with no problems.

My investigations :

I reinstalled graphic card drivers => did not worked

At first i thought it was a PSU problem, i had a 650W Gold PSU so i bought a new one : 1000W Titanium PSU. While changing the PSU i’ve also noticed that the old PSU fan was not pointing towards the good direction (towards the outside of the pc) so i corrected that. => did not worked

I thought it was a temperature problem, and monitored the GPU temp. GPU temp seemed to never be past 80 degrees, and crash seems to occurs when temp is 80 degrees. I’ve also opened the pc to see if there was a problem with the fans. I had a problem with one fan that did a lot of noise, so i changed it and the noise was gone. I’ve also noticed that the airflow was bad, and corrected it (fans in the facade were pointing in wrong direction). => did not worked

I updated my BIOS and reset it to default => did not worked

I read that sometimes, graphics card problems may be screen problems. So i started to play on my other screen => working so far, investigation still in progress..

I read a lot about this problem, but i don’t know what else to do. I want to find what component causes the problem so i’ve analysed the computer logs, unsuccessfully.

My build :

MB : Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite
Proc : AMD Ryzen 9 5900X 12-Core processor, 3701 MHz
GPU: Gigabyte geforce RTX 3070 Eagle OC 8G
PSU: be quiet ! Dark Power 13 1000W, ATX 3.0, 80 Plus® Titanium
RAM: Crucial Ballistix BL2K16G32C16U4BL RGB, 3200 MHz, DDR4, DRAM, 32Go (16Go x2),
Proc Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4
Screen 1 (on which i’m testing if it works) : PL2530H 75Hz
Screen 2 : VG248 144Hz
OS: Windows 11

I have noticed also that when playing games, my GPU was solicited a lot (even in low res) and usually the fans of the GPU go in a cycle of : 1) working 100% (with a lot of noise) and then 2) working 50%. And then cycle repeat (cycle is like 10s) until crash. BUT last time, when playing low res, the GPU fans were not in this cycle, they were working 50% all the time, and crash still happened…

Thanks ! Some updates :

It was not a screen problem, games crashed even when playing on the other screen.
i changed the GPU to my old card Geforce 1070, and i could play all afternoon on High res on Baldur’s gate 3 , so i guess the 3070 is dead (already ?) i don’t know what to do with that. I guess i can put the “broken” graphic card into my girlfriend’s pc and see if the crash occurs. But i don’t know if it can be repaired or diagnosed

Whenever you changed GPU’s did you clean install the graphics drivers?
Perhaps Perform a clean install of the graphic card driver with DDU
Put the 3070 back in.
Test after the cards drivers are refreshed.

Then you will know for sure.

No, i did nearly nothing, i just checked in NVIDIA control panel if there was an update available.. I’ll test the DDU method as soon as possible and post results, thanks
