Ryzen 7 5800x 70c idle 90c while gaming

Hi,

I recently noticed that my Ryzen 7 5800X temperatures are very high. It idles at 50-70°C and reaches 90°C while gaming (Fc 25, CSGO, Fortnite).

I have an Antec C40 Pro CPU cooler. I know the cooler is somewhat weak for this CPU, but I just want to make sure that getting a better cooler will result in good temperatures for this CPU.

By the way, I haven’t overclocked the CPU; everything is set to default in the BIOS.

Can I ask what you are using to monitor your temps.

Your CPU cooler is pretty good and more than capable of keeping your processor temps down, was it out of the box new from Antec when you paired it with this CPU.

What case, GPU and PSU do you have.

How many case fans do you have and where in the case are they mounted.

The cooler was new, it was used on my old cpu before and i recently bought the r7 5800x.

My case is antec nx210
Gpu: rtx 2070 super
Psu: antec vp650 plus 650w

I have 4 case fans in total, 3 in the front and one at the back of the case

How was the old thermal compound cleaned off, what new thermal compound was applied and how was the compound applied atop of the CPU.

A decent enough case and cooling arrangement.

You need a better PSU as the one that you have is too weak, it is what Antec call a Value Power product, this means that it is only intended for onboard video or the most basic of low power GPU, the PSU is actually rated as – Tier E • Avoid

Your build needs a 650W or above Gold efficiency rated PSU from one of the following, Corsair RM range, EVGA, Seasonic or Super Flower, seven year warranty minimum but preferably ten.

I recently changed my thermal compound to see if it makes a difference on the temps. I cleaned it using paper towel with a little bit of alcohol. I applied the new thermal compound by just putting a dot in the middle of the cpu, i checked a few tutorials on how to apply thermal compound so im pretty sure i applied it good.
Will a better psu make a big difference with the temps?

It is important that you answer the above.

You need a new PSU regardless, not intending to be impolite but the present supply is junk and the longer that you use it the more harm it will do your hardware and the GPU being the most power hungry it will suffer first and the most.

Last but not least, please do not be selective with the information that you provide, we are trying to help you but to be able to do so we need to have the full picture, you don`t use paper towels and any old alcohol to clean off and prepare a CPU and a used heatsink, you need coffee filter papers and 75 to 99% pure alcohol, what you describe is typical of a badly prepared heatsink and CPU cap.

I used arctic mx4 thermal compound

A good compound but what size was the dot, the X or spreading the gunk evenly across the CPU cap with a plastic spatula are better when using MX4.

What was the alcohol you used and what sort of paper towels, other than coffee filter papers you should only ever use a lint free cloth as anything else leaves fibres behind that contaminate the thermal compound.

I understand.
The dot size was sized like a piece of rice.
I used 70% alcohol because i didnt have 99%.

Not enough thermal compound, it needed to be the size of a pea.

Suggest that you redo the compound but this time get yourself some coffee filter papers or a lint free cloth and use the X or the spatula method, if you haven’t got a plastic spatula use something like a no longer used bank card, the alcohol should be okay as long as you properly clean both the bottom of the heatsink and atop of the CPU, take your time and don`t use anything that may scratch the surface of either the heatsink or CPU cap.
