    Which cpu

I have an i5-8600k paired with an Msi rtx 3060 12gb. My family now want to upgrade the CPU and motherboard. What would pair well with the 3060? We play 1080p 144hz. I was thinking of a good mobo with a reasonable CPU then a few years later change only the CPU. (Just a thought). Anyway any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Upgrading the CPU dictates your mobo choices due to the socket of whatever CPU you opt for.
Your current i5-8600 has socket 1151, later gen i5’s (up to gen 10) have socket 1200.
    All current i7 & i9 range, and i5’s above gen 10, use socket 1700.
If you wait long enough, Intel has socket 1851 in the wings waiting to come out as well.

So work out your processor choice, let that decide your mobo choice and make sure it is compatible with your current GPU.
You talk about changing your CPU in a few years, more likely you’ll be changing your GPU.

Other mobo considerations: it has the USB ports you want now and in the future (USB3, USB-C, front and back), it has a NVMe slot, can handle future memory upgrades, has multiple fan headers.

Thank you for replying, we are thinking about the 12400 with Msi b660m or 12600k with z690m, but maybe it could be interesting to see what comes out this autumn

Then there are the end of financial year sales, and if you wait long enough, Christmas sales.
There is currently the big Amazon Prime sale, and do you guys have the Black Friday sales end of November?

Murphy’s Law - buy your gear tomorrow and the new stuff will be released next month. Wait for Autumn and it still won’t be released before Winter.

Also, don’t fall into the trap of upgrading your mobo and CPU only to later realise you also need different memory and a better power supply, and before you know it, it would have been cheaper to just buy a whole new rig (be there , done that).
