Hey I’m new to PC building and my friend gave me his old one to start with. He said I need a solid state drive that is “SATA”. I have no clue what that means. And that i need to put windows 10 on a flashdrive for the operating system but I’m not sure how to do that either. Any suggestions/help would be very much appreciated

g’day and welcome to the forum.
not knowing your budget or the PC specs, I’ll keep it simple.
your SSD will be something along these lines; Samsung 870 QVO 1TB 2.5in SATA SSD (MZ-77Q1T0BW) - Umart.com.au
depending on your motherboard, it may be able to take a NVMe SSD, which would be a slightly better option.
the SSD plugs into where the traditional mechanical hard drives go.
as to getting Windows on to a USB stick.
use the Windows Media Creation Tool, available from the Microsoft web site.
use that tool to create a bootable USB stick.
then use that stick to boot the PC from and follow the bouncing ball to reload Windows on to the new SSD.
you may need to go into the BIOS settings of the PC to tell it to boot from the USB stick before any other device. -
He said the motherboard is pretty old so it isnt compatible with NVMe SSD but thank you for the reccomendations i’ll start thereComment
