Strange Memory Issue

Hi everyone,

I recently decided to upgrade my PC, and ended up changing pretty much all the parts. It’s been running smoothly for a while, but I’ve been having a strange issue in the past weeks, and If someone knows what’s happening, that would be a great help! Here is what happens:

When powering on and arriving on Windows 10, everything’s fine, I go about my day, editing videos (I edit videos on Premiere Pro for a living), and at some point, something breaks, my two screens flash black for a second, and the following happens:
• My open internet browsers tab turns white with an insufficient memory issue (screenshot attached) - non-open browsers are fine
• When trying to edit a video, Premiere Pro will display a warning message saying memory is limited and I should be careful with my project (screenshot)
• If I ignore the PP message and start exporting a video, I’ll have an error message, I’ve had several different ones.
• Sometimes, no always, my Desktop background turns solid blue (screenshot)

So far the only thing that has worked is restarting the PC. Then everything is fine, until eventually the problem will happen again.

At some point, my PC wouldn’t turn on: it would get stuck on the Windows 10 loading screen forever. I found a temporary fix, which was to remove my Ram dimms, and move them from the 1/3 position to 2/4. Then my PC would start normally, until the issue shoed up again.

Here are the specs of the PC if that helps:
• Core I7 12700K
• ASUS TUF gaming B660-PLUS Wifi D4
• Gigabyte 3070 OC Gaming
• Trident Z RGB 32Go DDR4 3600 CL18
• Crucial P3 Plus 2To PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD

Don’t hesitate to ask me for more info!

Let’s get some more information:

Download and run the free version of speccy.

Once you have ran speccy, follow the instructions to upload a snapshot found here.

Please list your power supply unit (manufacturer and model)

How often does the problem happen, and how often do you restart your PC?

Sure, no problem, here is the snapshot of my specs:

My PSU is a Corsair RM1000x Plus Gold

For the frequency of the issue, tbh, it’s quite often, sometimes 3-4 restarts per day. The issue often (no always) happens right as I open a project on Premiere Pro, so I have to restart to complete the export.

Hope that helps!

Let’s get some basics out of the way:

You upgraded everything, are you certain that you plugged in all of your power connectors in fully and in the right direction (modular PSUs have directional cables, one for the PSU side and for the component side).

Same for ram, making sure it is seated correctly and in the proper slots is important.

Slots 2 and 4 going away from the CPU are correct in your circumstances.

This is just a precursory check, if things get bad enough we’ll have to disassemble the whole system and reassemble it on a box, but we’ll save that for later.

On the software side:

This is my laundry list, it’s a good starting point for troubleshooting and should get you an idea what’s going on, none of these should impact a warranty claim or personal data:
1. Try running the following programs, also try to keep at least 25-30% of your disks as free space.

Run Disk Cleanup (check all the boxes) this will delete things such as your recycling bin, so make sure you don’t have any files you want to keep.

Run Defragment and Optimize Drives, run this on your drives.

These will free up some space, but you may need to relocate/delete files to reach the suggested free space.
1. Disable any overclocking or changes to power/performance settings

Undo any overclocking you may have done (if any)

Settings > System > Power and sleep > Additional power settings
Make sure your power plan is set to balanced, high performance/ultimate performance is only beneficial on gaming laptops where it needs that extra boost.
1. Check for Operating System Corruption

Right click on the Windows logo in the bottom left and select Windows Powershell (Admin) or Terminal (Admin)
Run these three commands separately:

sfc /scannow

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

These will take a while to run, do not close out of Powershell/Terminal while they are running, if one fails then move onto the next and then loop back around.

Note: It doesn’t hurt to make a system backup before you make all these changes, save any important files of folders. While these changes shouldn’t cause any issues, better to be safe than sorry.

To add to what has been stated above.

The projects that you load are located where you have 2 driver C and D?

You may try increasing the available space on D if there could be not enough space for the temp files to be created.

Partition 0
Partition ID: Disk #1, Partition #0
Disk Letter: D:
File System: NTFS
Volume Serial Number: 34AB4C69
Size: 465 GB
Used Space: 386 GB (83%)
Free Space: 79 GB (17%)

Some editors have also stated that you should use 64 GB RAM. 32 GB is ok for basic editing yet the more intense editing you do the more RAM the better off you are. Especially if you are attempting to do 4k compared to 720 to 1080.

What are the results of running Premiere Pro and not all of the other programs in the background?
You have
Steam
BattleNet
MSPaint
Which will use more RAM that is not available for Premiere Pro to utilize.

Thanks both of you for your quick responses:

@Pyro:

I took care of the software side of things
• Disk Cleanup + Defragment: Done on both of my drives
• Overclocking: I made sure I’m on normal mode, no overclocking is enabled
• /Scannow: “Currupted files WERE detected, and repaired”
• /CheckHealth: “No dammage detected”
• /RestoreHealth: “Restoration has been done - Operation succeded”

The problem sill persists…

I haven’t open up my pc to check connection yet but will do tomorrow, there are some important projects I need to finish-up before risking not being able to use my PC momentarily.

@Rustys:

Since my system upgrade, I am only running 1 NVMe M.2 SSD. The other one is an old external hard drive where I keep some heavy files I sometimes need.
All my projects’ raw footage, assets, and final exports take care on my SSD, which is not partitioned at the moment.
• For RAM size, I think it’s fine because I mostly handle 1440p footage, and occasionally 1080p. Plus my older system (Core I5, 16Go Ram and 1660 SUPER) used to handle that load quite well, it simply was too slow to export.
• I don’t think background programs have a lot of impact, because when I restart the PC and do the exporting, it goes really smoothly. It’s just when this “break” occurs, that it displays memory error messages. But I’ll still try to open Premiere without anything else running.
It just would be a bummer if that system couldn’t handle PP + a couple of other softwares haha.

I’ll keep you posted for the PSU connection report.
Thanks again

Run a clean boot on the system.

Also try a different log in for the computer an see if the issue replicates.

Check your settings for everything and make sure they are still correct sometimes updates can and do make changes without notifying users.

What happens when you disable Kaspersky?

What are the make and model for the RAM?

What are the sizes for each?

So I checked the PSU connections and everything seems to be in place and correctly connected.

My Ram are Trident Z RGB 32Go DDR4 3600 CL18, split into two sticks of 16Go each.

I have just tried disabling Kaspersky and the issue still persists.

I’m going to try a clean boot, will let you know if it helps.

Thanks again!

You might also try a different login to the system and see if the issue replicates on a different user.

If I may chime in with an observation;

The RAM is not appropriate for your CPU, Intel state here up to 3200MHz and if you have XMP enabled the RAM will get auto OCd past what the CPU can handle and the PC will fall over.

Try restoring the MBs default factory settings in the BIOS, they are sometimes listed as one of the following " factory defaults" “most stable” or on newer boards “optimized” please note that if you have both the “most stable” and the “optimized” options in the BIOS you should choose the most stable" option as in this instance the “optimized” settings are a form of overclocking that can cause instability.

Save the new settings, exit the BIOS, restart the computer, test by using the computer as you normally would, post back with an update once you have done this.

NB: Where on earth did the power plan setting come from, normal use on a gaming/video editing class rig

Active power scheme: Normal use

Damn, I knew that you had to be careful about RAM and motherboard compatibility, but I had no idea this was also the case with the CPU… Good to know!

One thing for sure is that my XMP is not enabled, in fact I think this may have (partially) caused a previous issue I had when first building the PC, on which you assisted about two months ago.
I’m a bit scared of resetting to BIOS because of that problem I had before, which was way more serious, meaning a BSOD at every singe boot up, but I’m gonna try anyway.

I’m also planning to get a new Lian Li case because my current case’s airflow is still set to my previous system (no awful overheating, but could be better), so this will give me the opportunity to dissassemble and reassemble everything.

For the power plan: I think this may have been set by the technician who helped me for my previous issue, do you change that in the BIOS, or via Windows directly?

Thanks again for the helpful responses.

So, the issue is definitely happening less often. When it used to happen 3-4 times a day, it now sometimes doesn’t occur in a full day, but still from time to time.
I looked to change the Power plan as was mentioned previously, but could only find information on how to change it for a laptop, in relation to batterie life. That made me wonder: could the issue partially come from limited power drawn from my PSU, hindering my RAM or CPU performance? I might be completely off here, but could it?

From the start menu scroll to and select Windows System
Select Control Panel
In the right corner where it says View By: use Large and or small.
In the list below select Power Options
Put the button in the Balanced.
close the window.
