Texture Pop-Ins across games.

I’ve been having a persistent problem with texture pop-in problems, where textures will appear low-res for a few seconds before gradually loading in. Usually this problem occurs when a model is loaded in, such as when I engage a character in dialogue or hover over a character in a select screen. I’ve had this issue with most new-ish games I’ve played, including Baldur’s Gate 3, Tiny Tina, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, and Immortals of Aveum. It’s become pretty demoralizing, and takes me out of the games. I don’t mind if my rig isn’t quite up to snuff, but I’ve been told that my hardware is actually pretty decent and should be able to handle these games without issue. If anyone has any suggestions on how I could improve performance, I’d be very grateful.

Here are my hardware specs. If I’m missing anything relevant please let me know:
Windows 10
13th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i7-13700K 3.40 GHz
32.0 GB (31.8 GB usable)
64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Samsung SSD 980 Pro 2TB
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 (latest drivers installed)

This is dependent on many factors, but VRAM can be a main culprit. Also, do any of these games preload textures when you first start the games? If so, give them time to finish the preload.

Look in the settings of the various games. Try manipulating (lower and raise) these settings that relate to textures and test.
Look for LOD Distance in the settings.

Apparently you are not the only one with issues. In this link are some things to try for BG3.

Thank you for responding and your helpful advice.

I have a little over 8gb of VRAM. This meets recommended stats, but yeah, that could still well be the problem. I’ve seen some websites that suggest you can increase your dedicated VRAM in your BIOS, but if such a thing is actually possible with my card I haven’t figured out how.

I don’t know if BG3 or the other games preload textures. I will say it’s a consistent problem that occurs over the course of play, however. For example, if I talk to a character twice the textures will be fine the second time, but over time the game seems to “forget” the textures; subsequent conversations will have the same problem.

Playing with BG3’s settings, paradoxically, has no impact on the issue. I reduced resolution to 1920x1080 and set all settings to “low”, and the issue remains the same.

I followed the advice recommended on the Reddit post, including disabling the launcher and turning off DLSS and FSR, to no noticeable effect.

So it seems, at least to me, that VRAM is the likeliest culprit of the possibilities you suggested.

This is significant.

When you say “talk to a character” is it a cutscene or an actual in-game interaction? In the “over time/subsequent convos” time frame, is it the same scene, same background, etc? I am a gamer but have never played BG3.

Dialogue in BG3 works very similar to how, say, Bioware games do. The characters and background remain where they are, the camera angle changes, and dialogue options load up. Here’s an example:

One thing I see is the PSU - It’s in the E Tier (Avoid). PSU Tier List rev. 17.0g - Cultists Network

If you replace it, Look at the Tier A and B. Look for at least a 10-year warranty.

Thanks again to @phillpower2 for the PSU link.
