RAM issue on AMD Zen 4

Hey all,

I was wondering if anyone else has ever seen this issue and if you were ever able to figure it out. So I am running a Windows 11 desktop with an Asus B650-A gaming Wifi board paired with a Ryzen 7 7700X and 32 GB of G.Skill 6000 @4800. Everything works great for several days until the computer crashes with a non helpful crash message inside of Windows. When it comes back up, most of my RAM is unusable.

Each 16 GB stick of RAM reports as 2 GB, giving me a total of 4 GB of usable RAM. If I reseat the sticks, flash the BIOS, or shut down the system, the RAM will start reporting back correctly. I opened a ticket with Asus but they just want to RMA the board. I wanted to hold off as different BIOS versions give me more time between crashes. For example, the old 1410 beta version gives me 2-3 weeks vs a newer version giving me 2-3 days between crashes.

Anyone ever seen this before?

So that has a lot of data I would rather not share in a public forum. Is there anything you are looking for in particular? if you need the file, then I will need to go through it and take some things out before posting it.

thank you. so I am testing something right now. I have disabled PBO as someone I know suggested this. I am going to see if this works. I know it sounds stupid that I don’t want to RMA this but honestly, I don’t think it is a board issue. I think it is an ASUS BIOS issue as I have had many challenges with their crap BIOS updates. And I have had a hard time with their customer support as well. I will update here is this works so maybe someone else can find this useful.

Ryzen 7 7700X and 32 GB of G.Skill 6000 @4800.

The RAM is not appropriate for your CPU, AMD state here up to 5200MHz and if you have XMP enabled the RAM will get auto OCd past what the CPU can handle and the PC will fall over, also known to cause problems is Ryzen CPUs not liking slow RAM and you not being able to enable XMP means that to get the best from the CPU you will have to manually OC the RAM to 5200MHz and the voltage that G. Skill recommend for your particular RAM.

You should also make sure that the Windows Power Plan is set to Balanced and not High Performance or Ryzen Balanced.

Something to keep in mind for the future, a CPU must be compatible with a MB whereas the RAM has to be compatible with both the CPU and the MB, this because a MB can be compatible with faster CPUs and MB manufacturers often state RAM speeds that far exceed what any CPU the board can handle.

@phillpower2 thanks for the response. I didn’t know that about XMP. I will just run it at 4800 for now. And the power profile is set to balanced.

@Bruce so far so good. No crashes since disabling PBO. And I am on the latest BIOS so a plus there as well. RAM is running at 32 GB
