    Upgrading Storage Drive

Will the Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 fit my MSI Z170A SLI. I need to upgrade my ancient 12 year old 1TB Western Blue HDD I can feel it dying by the day on me. I’m not a huge computer guy but I know that the SSD is PCIE 4.0 and the motherboard is 3.0

      • 1 x M.2 Key M Socket supports type 2280/2260/2242 storage devices in PCIE Gen3 x4 mode

According to MSI you’re fine to have one NVMe M.2 SSD, The standards are backwards compatible, so the only ‘issue’ will be that 990 Pro will run at gen 3 speeds instead of gen 4.

If you want to save some money, you could look at a 970 Evo Plus- a 2TB drive is around 30% cheaper and there shouldn’t be a notable performance difference unless you plan on transferring tons of files constantly.
