I’ve built 4 PCs before and this is the first time I’ve run into this problem. See my profile for components list.
POST passes CPU, DRAM, VGA, and stops on BOOT with either debug code A9 (start of setup) or Ab (setup input wait) if I hit DEL/F11.* However, during the VGA test my monitor wakes up, displays “no signal”, then goes back into sleep mode despite DEL or F11. Since I only have a black screen, I am unable to proceed with setup or anything.
Here’s what I’ve tried:
** Oddly when I first powered up the replacement refurbished Z690 I got a CPU/Memory change message on screen. It was up for a fraction of a second and gone to “no signal” before I could hit DEL. It was so quick I almost feel like I imagined it. Didn’t get that with subsequent boot attempts or with the brand new Z690 or the brand new Z790.
Other than the POST on the new build, I can’t test the mobo, CPU or RAM. I don’t have anything else compatible with those components. But having tried 3 mobos, 2 CPUs, 2 monitors, 3 video cables, 4 GPUs and 4 RAM on this build and getting the same result…? I can’t figure this out.

Here’s what I’ve tried:
- Checked compatibility of all components on manufacturers’ websites prior to purchase/build.
- Cleared CMOS and updated BIOS to version 7D28v17 per the mobo manufacturer for the installed CPU.
- Ensured all power connections secured to mobo (ATX and 2 CPU 8s) and GPU (8 and 6). I have a 1050W PSU that works. Estimated max 700W required for this build.
- Ensured new GPU is properly seated in PCI-E slot 1. Also tried it in slot 2. The mobo has no iGPU. Confirmed the GPU works with my old build.
- Ensured HDMI cable securely connected to GPU and monitor. These components work with my old build. Also tried an old monitor with a DVI cable and 3 old GPUs (2 GTX 970s and a GTX 1080) which all work on old build. All attempts resulted in “no signal”.
- RMA the mobo. Also tried a new ASRock Z790 Riptide which did have an iGPU (still "no signal’). I doubt I had 3 bad new mobos. **
- RMA the CPU. Had a new i9-13900K before replacing it with a new i9-13900KF.
- Checked CPU and socket for damage.
- Tried installing each of 4 sticks of new RAM in DIMM-A2 individually. Ensured fully seated. I doubt I have 4 bad sticks.
- Tried out-of-chassis test to rule out mobo grounding.
- Went on vacation for 2 weeks. Had fun but it failed to fix my computer.
- When I had an SSD hooked up with Windows 10 installed on it, it would sometimes complete POST with no errors but still had no video signal. Currently I just have a clean M.2 SSD installed.
