The hard drive on my HP All-in-One (i5 processor, 12GB RAM, model 24-df0000) failed (1TB Western Digital) so I replaced it with a new 2TB WD drive. I had to make a recovery drive (Windows 10) on my Acer laptop but I was able to get the HP back up and running without any problems. However, now the PC is very slow - from the time I press the power button to the log-on screen is several minutes and it used to be seconds. Plus, the hard drive seems to be grinding almost all the time. There is nothing on the hard drive right now (okay, go ahead and scold me for not making a backup. Stupid, I know . . . ). My wife suggests that I just throw it in the trash and buy a new one. Of course, she’s usually right. What do you think?

Hard drives are not good for running the operating system off. Slow load times are expected, I would suggest an SSD instead.
Hard drives can squeal or grind occasionally, they are mechanical spinning disks, but if it is constant then it’s possible the drive is faulty.
When you put the new drive in did you reinstall your drivers before allowing the computer to connect to the internet? -

Thanks for the quick reply. Perhaps an SSD would have been better but I had no complaints with the SATA that came with the PC - until it failed.
I’m afraid I don’t know the answer to your question about the drivers. I plug a recovery drive in and just followed the prompts - the PC was connected to WiFi as it always was/is. I guess you’re going to tell me now that that was the wrong way to do it. Am I screwed or can I just start all over? With a recovery drive, how would you install drivers?Comment

Did you make the recovery from windows or from HP.
What is the serial number of your computer.
I would be concerned about a new drive making noise. As Pyro points out they are mechanical.
An SSD would have been a better buy.
You could always buy a ssd and install it and also buy a caddy for the sata drive and use it as an external backup.Comment
