    Issues with my HDD/SSD

Regarding my skill level, I only know enough to be dangerous. About two months ago my HDD crashed. Couple days ago Windows 10 crashed. I replaced the HDD and I reinstalled Windows. I built this PC about 5.5 years ago. Up until now, this has been a pretty good runner. Be Quiet case, power supply and a couple extra fans, 7700k CPU, 16GB DDR4 ram, Radeon RX580 GPU. Maybe a little overkill but I am also a hot rodder. Maybe you know the pledge. If enough is good and more is better, then too much is just right. I would like to upgrade what I have to run Windows 11. Gen 7 is one gen too old for Windows 11. I know there is a workaround, but I really don’t want to do that. I have an idea about what to buy but I may lean on you for assurance and expertise. Hope you don’t mind. I would hope to contribute some of my ignorance to help you avoid the same issues. Happy New Year.

Hello & welcome. Happy New Year to you too.
My laptop is Gen 6 & runs Win 11 better than it does Win 10 imo.

Thanks for getting back to me. How did u do that? Me thinking about getting new SSD to run Windows. Maybe old SSD getting a little wonky. Been using HDD second drive for files. Can I install my old Windows 10 and upgrade?

        Full tutorial here:
This tutorial will show you how to bypass the Windows 11 CPU, RAM, Secure Boot, and TPM 2.0 system requirements allowing you to clean install or upgrade to Windows 11 on a unsupported PC that doesn't meet these requirements. Installing Windows 11 on a device that does not meet Windows 11...

I would recommend installing Win 10 & running windows updates until none are left. Or you can clone the old drive to the new drive using Macrium Reflect & then just swap the drives.

Updates seem to be stalled. Stuck at 0% no movement. That’s why I’m thinking new SSD. Will try on current SSD for practice.

Sometimes updates can stick at 0% for 5 minutes or so then jump to 30%. If the PC hasn’t been updated in a while or with a clean install then updates can take a while if there are a lot of them. I would leave it a few hours.

20H2 took over an hour after failing at least 5 times. Now I get a message in red about critical security updates and drivers still missing but it won’t update. I’ll update some myself and see what happens. Thanks for your help.

Have you tried resetting the update components?
Open cmd prompt/powershell with admin & enter:
                  Net Stop bits
                  Net Stop wuauserv
                  Net Stop appidsvc
                  Net Stop cryptsvc
                  Ren %Systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore DataStore.bak
                  Ren %Systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution\Download Download.bak
                  Ren %Systemroot%\System32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
                  Del “%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat”
                  Net Start bits
                  Net Start wuauserv
                  Net Start appidsvc
                  Net Start cryptsvc
Restart the PC & try updating again.

                  And/or:
Search for services.msc & find Windows Update & ensure it is set to Automatic.

I’ll try that. Thanks. I like Malwarebytes Premium also. Having other issues with fresh reinstall. I bet u can’t wait to hear about them.

                      Keep us updated.
You might have hardware problems if a clean install is having problems.

I may do another install. I unchecked some boxes that maybe I should have left alone. I think Onedrive still has a grip on my second drive(HDD). I’ll reformat that.

I am going to try the fix u recommended again. By hardware problems, are we thinking the SSD?

In that case, I have been looking at the support list for my Gigabyte Z270 mobo. Samsung 970 EVO plus MZ-V7S250 or 500BW is on the list. I found 970EVO plus MZ250 or 500B/AM. Does the suffix mean anything? I know sometimes the difference may just be packaging. I recently found that with a car part. I’m not stuck on Samsung. I have 960 EVO now. That’s just an example.
